I must admit until I read Post-Mortem's comments I was not satisfied at all with the ending, but those really put things into perspective. Put me in that camp as well. I leaned more towards #2 myself: Mike had died and the "memory" of Reg and Mike as a boy was a final (happy) dying thought. But I like your #4 theory now, IF P4 is to be the final movie. Of course, I'd prefer P5 to tell us how it really ends... but that's just me.

Postmortem, your explanation is wonderful. Much more poetic and hopeful than my dreary 'Mike dealing with his families death' theory....love it and I'm sticking with this ...it's quite beautiful.

Yes, I think I would be perfectly happy on how the series ended if there wasn't ever a part 5. Sure there's still many unanswered questions and different theories on what had happened. I just thought the last image of Mike and Reggie back in the 1970's driving off into the darkness was perfect. I like the idea if this really is the final film that was Mike's last happy memory before he died. I really have to say I agree with this 100%. Even though it would be great to see one more Phantasm film, I think Oblivion is, for now, a good end to the series. It was the certainly a very twisty film and many things were unexplained, but that is part of the appeal of the series. You never know the full picture... I've always found the final scene to be very touching and sad, as it's Mike remembering, as he's dying(hence the zooming in to his eyes) one of the happy momenrs from his childhood, before the Tall Man arrived(the "last perfect day") with his friend, Reggie. I think it's very reminiscent of the final scene from the first film, which I will say I also found just as touching(until Coscarelli pulled the rug from under the viewer's feet.). So yeah, Mike died. As for Reggie...we'll have to wait and see...

I really enjoyed IV and how it ended. I loved the origins of the Tall Man and the great use of flashbacks with the deleted scenes. I think the series ended the way it should, just enough of an open ending, but with enough information to make it full circle. Personally, I do not need a V, but if it did come into being, I would definitely be excited.
Next to the first one, IV is my second favorite. It makes a cool double feature. I really dug postmortem's thoughts on the ending.
I always looked at it as the story came full circle and it was a phantasm in Mike's mind but that the events of the first film are just about to start with the scene of Reggie and Mike in the truck. Maybe it was foreshadowing in a Phantasm type way?
I'm not sure if Mike's last happy memory would be of him and Reg, most probably it would be Jody and him cruising around. So my thought is he's back on the street in 1978 and the Tall Man is coming. It was his last perfect day. He may have even foreseen his own death that manifested itself as a vision included in Mike's phantasm.
Either way you look at it, that is the beauty of the Phantasm series, it's always open to your interpretation.

Well said Baron. I would really like to see 5, but in the end it would no doubt be a disappointment to actually have all of the questions answered, thus, a final end actually destroying the "Phantasm" that we have all shared. Scubasteve says it best, "Careful what you look for"...

Thanks prymal, and I agree with you.
I will say this with the greatest respect: In all honesty I wonder how Scrimm would be onscreen. IV was 14 years ago. He is 85 years old. For us fans, it would be a treat to see the crew back again, but in reality the movie wouldn't make any money. Most people today either do not know about Phantasm or wouldn't even bother with it. Most probably they would laugh at it because it wasn't some lame gore filled, teen slashing CGI filled horror movie.
I would be disappointed to see our favorite series devolve into a Friday the 13th part 37. Maybe instead of a V, Universal and Anchor Bay need to work out their differences for business and put out a US Phantasm box set. Now that would be cool.

I must admit until I read Post-Mortem's comments I was not satisfied at all with the ending, but those really put things into perspective. I guess I can live with one of those now that you explain them, but I still think putting a conclusion on in P5 would be the best. If Reg dies in a blaze of glory, I wanna see how. ^this.

All 4 movies are absolutely great! Just wanted to say that I believe in postmortem's post on the first page. I just wish Mike hadn't died...

Hmm..it's hard to say. It seems like at the end of Phantasm IV, we're done with these characters. I did like that the end was decidedly unspectacular. Mike makes a car sphere, blows up the car, Tall Man takes his ball and goes home. Is Mike and Jody dead? Reg is left hanging since he's a phan favorite. Since it's been mentioned that everyone is so much older now, can't Phantasm V be achieved as an animated feature? Use everyone's voice talents while they're still alive, it won't cost as much and it can go straight to DVD and Blu-Ray since there's no way this will be released theatrically

I heard it proposed once of a weekly Phantasm show, but that was years ago. Personally, i think that would be awesome!

I am happy with it. The way it ended with Reggie going through the space gate to hunt down The Tall Man. Mike sadly dying. It does leave more to be desired but I am happy with the way they ended this movie. Don't get me wrong I'd love to see a Phantasm 5. I still hope it gets made.
