Good call making this thread and sticking it. I was getting tired of having to explain or see other explain why it's not on dvd in the States.

i am sorry that Universal has to be greedy, and not want to make available to their consumer base a popular title. Most of the die hard Phans, have a copy of p2, wether it be a hacked, r2 or a VHS. i think that was a very good run down of the 411. thanks Dustin. we can still dream i guess, and wait for monkeys to fly out of my butt. I would like to see a Night Of The Creeps DVD put out by AB, you would think they could swing those rights.

I was getting tired of having to explain or see other explain why it's not on dvd in the States. You're not the only one. It gets extremely tedious after having to explain it 9034328434832 times.

Sorry I've been gone so long, folks. It's a crazy time of year for me at work.
Anyway... I never tire of folks asking about when P2 is coming out on DVD.
And the reason is this: Interest.
I am grateful there are phans that still WANT such a thing. The day people stop asking will be sad indeed. When you put a year of your life into making a film--one you really love and believe in--it's frustrating to see it being treated in such a cavalier manner by the studio reps.
On the other hand, at least Universal was WILLING to quote a price. Was it too high just to discourage the bidder? Or is it that Universal is trying to recoup all the money they put into marketing the film (they DID a helluva job back in 1988)? I'd like to think they feel the film is worth the amount they suggested--and that they feel there is enough interest in the film to warrant such a price. I'm probably putting a positive spin on things because I still have hope.
Anyway, OG said "one word." Here's mine:

It'd be wrong for me not to post here. Dustin, I have no f'n idea how you get all these connections but I feel very relieved now that a word from Anchor Bay has been issued...although with all of their freakin Evil Dead DVD's that always sell I would think they could comprehend the price to pay, and maybe even haggle it down a bit. Yeah they're deffinately not the same since the STARZ takeover but there still one of the best to distribute these films. And I too am very surprised they havn't done anything with Night of the Creeps. This is just plain obnoxious though on Universal's part. I absolutely adore Phantasm II- it's pretty much tied with the first but it's basicly my favorite. Ignoring directions taken upon progression, P2 just seemed perfect in so many ways. Acting like a new beginning to the releality of the nightmare. I could rant for days about this tohugh. Sooo not fair If I may ask, theres going to be a box-set in 2009? They should just hold off if it's solely gonne be 1, 3, & 4. Just seems kinda pointless. As big a fan as I am I'll only buy it if theres prominant extra content included for a reasonable price. The reason for Universal wanting such a discouraging high price to license Phantasm II is most likely directly related to bad blood between Universal & Anchor Bay going back to the early days of DVD. Universal licensed alot of their cult movies to Anchor Bay, among those being such DVD hits as Army Of Darkness & Repo Man. Universal thought they wouldn't sell well and gave Anchor Bay a great deal on licensing them only to have them be huge hits for Anchor Bay and Universal feel like they made a big mistake in licensing them. Universal does not want to make that same mistake twice. Universal turned a profit on Phantasm II between International Rights, Video Rentals & Sales and TV Rights, so recouping a profit is not the reason for Universal's high asking price. The really stupid thing about Universal and their stance is that a high def master already exists for Phantasm II and has been licensed for TV distribution (Phantasm II was shown regularly on the now defunct Monsters HD channel last year). So Universal has spent the time and money to have a great transfer of the film made but they won't spend the money to release it on home video. But there is always hope. People said Howard The Duck would never be released on DVD and now Universal is releasing it in March as a special edition, so maybe 2009 will see the release of Phantasm II. After all Universal is running out of movies to release on DVD that have any fan base, let alone one that is sure to sell at least decently well.

Some of you have pointed out that Anchor Bay have released Universal titles before, Army of Darkness being an excellent example. As you may know, Anchor Bay released the crap out of AOD and laughed all the way to the bank. You had regular editions, special editions, directors cuts, etc. When the rights reverted back to Universal, they put out their own barebones edition and haven't much leased their films out to Anchor Bay since. In an effort to pry Phantasm II from Universal's clutches, Anchor Bay made an offer to Universal which included *all* of the original supplements they created for Army of Darkness. These featurettes, commentaries, etc. were included on editions of AOD that are now out of print. This would have allowed Universal to release their own special edition of AOD without having to create costly new supplements. Even still, Universal refused the offer.

Speaking of Evil Dead DVDs, I bought the first one yesterday again on DVD. The 2002 release. Just to own it. I also own the Book of the Dead versions of ED 1 & 2, Evil Dead Ultimated Edition, the normal release of Evil Dead 2, the "Official Bootleg" of Army of Darkness, & the regular edition of Army of Darkness.

I bought the ones at Wal-Mart that were $5. They are bare bones, but $15 for the trilogy is a steal. Not sure what year the edition was released.
