If this has been talked about before my bad. In subsequent films after PHANTASM 1 it was refered that the Tall man hated the cold. When I watch the first one and he walks past Reggies open ICTruck He pauses and is without a doubt in ecstasy with the cold.So I dont get the later hating the cold thing. Dead @ Evil like the cold. Rule #1

It could also be seen that he is trying to deal with the cold from the ice cream truck. He raises his hands and then lowers them, almost trying to deal with the pain that the cold is causing him. Since the cold was somewhat minor, he did not encounter any real harm from it, like he did in subsequent films.

I would think he doesn't like it due to the red planet's heat and gravity as well.
I would think the safest places to be from the Tall man would be places with cold climates.

I would think the safest places to be from the Tall man would be places with cold climates. I'm goin to climb into my fridge When Mike falls throgh the space gate in P1 in the white room, Reg pulls him out and it looks as though his denim jacket is covered in ice (as if someone took a CO2 fire extinguisher to him). He didn't look as though he was overly hot. How is that if the Red Planet is hot?

I agree about the safest place to hide from Tally is a a cold place. I don't really think heat has an effect on him since he was hanging out in Death Valley in oblIVion.
Steve, I always though that was some kind of steam coming off Mike's jacket but who knows? Maybe D-Money will know.

I don't think that cold place would stop Tally. He get's his sphere frozen in P3 and is still able to reappear and open up shop again. Granted, a really cold place might deter him, but I don't think it would really stop him.

Let us not forget,
The ecstasy that the Tall Man might SEEM to be experiencing was originally intended to signify pain. The idea of him disliking the cold wasn't a concept developed for the sequels. It was created for the original Phantasm. Pop in the DVD and view the deleted scenes. Find the alternate ending where Mike kills the Tall Man with a fire extinguisher. You can see from this, from the first film, that cold was always supposed to be a way to stop the Tall Man. Not ecstasy.
However, because the ice cream truck scene remained in the film and the fire extinguisher death was removed, the concept was never completed and what we, as an audience, are left with is a very ambiguous scene, one where you can draw your own conclusion.

I love that fire extinguisher scene. I *think* that my avatar is from that scene. I'm not at home to check the DVD.

Dustin . Your post does make sense. But I need to see the deleated scenes first. I still stand by my first account that in my view angus was rejuvinated by the cold of reggies truck.

The deleted scene is on the Anchor Bay release of Phantasm. It's an awesome scene, one that I wish was included in the film.

If the ice cream truck scene was intended to signify pain then it failed miserably. In Phantasm III when they did the flashback I was like "Uhh, what?"; it really did not add up and at first just added more bull to Phantasm 3.
The thing about the first Phantasm is that it wasn't really 3 hours long, that much footage was just shot, and within that footage lay many alternatives. I think the cold-thing was just one of many ideas Coscarelli had, but I think he ditched it in favor of both the ending that was present and so the ice cream scene wouldn't have to be re shot; notice how the former scene remains intact in the final cut but there is no anti-cold thing to follow---for a movie that was supposed to have no sequel at all why would there be any foreshadowing regarding this? Kinda pointless, isn't it? I thought the cold thing added up perfectly seeing as how he's essentially presented as a hollow, cold-hearted being and embracing the cold just seemed to be very fitting and kinda cool; changing it to pain not only makes no sense, but just plan removes a lot of the scene's impact. My cousin likes the movies as well and even she held the same reaction as I basically.

When I saw Phantasm back in 1979 I definitely got the impression the Tall Man was deterred by the cold mist. It seemed like it stopped him cold... Stunned him. Distracted him. Even caused him a measure of pain.
The Tall Man had been slowing his walk and turning to find Mike. He seemed to sense the boy nearby. If it hadn't been for the cold mist causing enveloping the Tall Man, I could easily have imagined the Tall Man mentally honing in on Mike (just like in P3--as though the Tall Man is focusing through dimensions and only Mike can sense him) and setting off across the street to capture the boy.
Anyway... The Tall Man always seemed to me to be grimacing. His hands come up in a warding off gesture. There is a pained slowness to his motions, as though the mist is literally freezing his limbs. That he breaths it in only makes things that much worse for him (though I have to admit it's like he's smelling something fragrant). Only as the mist dissipates can the Tall Man break free of its effect and continue on his way. His priority at that point is to get away from the truck, and he seems to have forgotten about Mike entirely.
The red planet is one of great heat. So he would likely be that much more sensitive to colder temperatures on Earth.
As for the Tall Man managing to survive the cold in P3 as a sphere... Yes, but it sure messed up his body. No normal human being freezes solid like that in the space of a few minutes. Besides, the Tall Man can "survive" anything because he keeps regenerating new bodies back on the Red Planet.
Anyway, that's my two cents.

It's kind of like people down here (FL) pulling on the parka's when it hits 60F.
The question is, since his shell(body) is destroyed by the cold, but his sphere is not, is he really ever going to go down?

Granted, a really cold place might deter him, but I don't think it would really stop him. After thinking about what I previously said, I do believe you are right. I don't think cold can completely stop him but it can slow him down as well as temporarily defeat him.

Whilst watching the ice cream truck scene again I've come up with a new theory. Putting side the other reasons for the Tall Man not liking the cold, I have this one. Stay with me on this.
Reggie is loading up his ice cream truck with dry ice (frozen CO2), we can tell this because he is wearing gloves in order to handle it and the steam coming from it would not happen with water ice. As Tally walks past, he gets a whiff of the fumes coming from the truck.
I've mever noticed before but if you turn your sound up, you hear the Tall Man inhale a couple of times, quite audibly. The breaths are definately coming from the Tall Man. Now, this could be due to the fact that the Red Planet has more of a CO2 atmosphere and CO2 is a greenhouse gas (a gas which traps in heat). Therefore, the Tall Man could prefer the heat of a warmer planet and therfore the Red Planet is hot as well!

Very interesting theory, Steve! I'll have to check for those inhales next time I pop Phantasm in.
