Early in Phantasm we see the Tall Man lift a casket into his hearse single-handedly with no effort. Being that he is just a man(Jedediah)....where does this superhuman power come from?

but i was watching Phantasm on dvd and in the beginning, angus scrimm gives an introduction to the movie. During the intro, he talks about how phantasm got started and to make a long story short, says that Don approached him with an idea that he would play an "alien" in a horror script he just wrote. during the course of the movie it strays from the tall man being an alien and in p4 we find out he was human. in the first film i believe he was supposed to be an alien, so thats where the strength comes from i believe. but briggs has a good opinion as well.

Trey, what makes you think that the Tall Man isn't an alien in any of the subsequent films?

He could be an alien that took over Jebodiah's body after he went through the space gate.

He has an extensive workout program that he follows when he's not out doing evil deeds.

Haha I just pictured Tally benching a bar with one dwarf-filled barrel on each end. The Caretaker is spotting him.

Trey, what makes you think that the Tall Man isn't an alien in any of the subsequent films? Mainly b/c of what i got out of P4 is that he was just a man who was a genius at science and he figured out how to break the time barrier and travel to different dimensions, not an alien from another planet.

I always thought he was a kind of daemon, rather than alien.

Careful here.... keep in mind what Jody said. Jebediah Morningside was a man.... but Jebediah Morningside made passage through the dimensional fork that night and never returned. The Tall Man appeared moments later in his image... and is in fact, very alien indeed.

How about, when he made his first passage through the spacegate he ended up on the Red Planet and made some sort of transformation there? I mean, when Mike (possibly a future Tall Man) entered for the first time thats where he ended up. Why wouldn't it be the same be for anyone else's first time?

I assumed he went to the red planet because thats where the tall man wanted him to go. Remember he goes through the gate again in part 2 and is in the red planet. I hope P5 introduces the red planet again.
As far as strength, I heard Tally has a breakfast consisting of wheaties and whey protein...

Again, Jebediah Morningside never came back.

Muahahha. If you mean Sphere Wars, you can call it by name. Holy jeez. It's not a sore subject around these parts or anything.

I always thought Reggie and Mike could kill the Tall Man and his minions but there were always more ready to come through the space gate to take his place.

To this world i would consider the tall man to be undead. Not a vampire , but a cursed immortal who is filled with hate and in his damnation, he would pull the who universe down upon us to get what he wanted.

I agree with the shape shifter idea. The Tall Man can be anyone (not sure about any thing). He has a special fondness for the form of Jebediah Morningside (and that, I think, is a key to understanding and possibly destroying him). For me, though, the alien idea was too pat. Demon was too archaic. I think there is a danger in boxing him into one category. He could be a combination of several things. Finally, remember the title of the movie, "Phantasm." Which means a ghost, an apparition, seeing a person's body where they're not know to be. I think the spiritual aspect of the Tall Man (and those under him) is very important. I never stopped thinking of him as a personification of Death. How he comes across to Michael seems based upon Mike's state of mind. As Mike gets closer to accepting his own death (hanging himself), the Tall Man becomes more like a friend/mentor. That too, I think, is important.

The last paragraph is very deep, and as I read it, seems to have alot of sense about it.

Thank you, IceCreamMan. That was very kind of you. I've had (ahem) 29 years to dwell on this and still turn it over in my mind from time to time. I first saw "Phantasm" on June 15, 1979. The Tall Man is one of those tremendous characters that you can never quite forget . Mr. Scrimm is such an awesome actor.
