So from my understanding everything that happened in the first film was a dream, pretty much, so how does reggie know to try the tuning fork trick on the dimensional metal rods if the first time he tried it, it happened in Mike's dream(PHANTASM I)? Reggie shouldn't have known to try that, or the other tuning fork scene where he bust's the sphere it references back to the time he was jamming with Jody in I, but that was, again, a dream of Mike's so how can he harken back to that as his own memory flashback??

Greg, well thought question. So... if everything is all Mike's dreams (Reg doing tuning fork routine on Spacegate in P1 and then Reg using tuning fork on sphere in P4), it would make sense that characters do the same things over and over again--like a subconscious motif. Ever had a repetitive dream? Real life Mike could have seen Reg doing the tuning fork many times while readying his guitar, and it's a characteristic of Reg with which Mike identifies (I sure do--I've watched Reg tune his guitar many a time in real life with tuning forks and then with a mechanical tuning system!).
If P1 is a dream, but P4 is real, then you are right, Reg wouldn't "remember" using the tuning fork method to deactivate the Spacegate. His picking up the tuning fork in P4 is more an act of desperation--reaching for anything (hard) that he can use against the sphere. Activating the hum of it is--IMO--more an act of desperation (almost a reflex because he's done it so many times in the past), not because he thinks it will really do anything. And he IS very surprised when it works (again, in my opinion).
If P1 is real, then Reg's use of the tuning fork in P4 is still last ditch, but done with foreknowledge.
All in all, then, the tuning fork is just an extension of Reggie's personality/life. And it's rather fitting that he would pass such a simple, innocuous aspect of himself on to Mike in P4. And that out of something seemingly innocent comes a weapon of great power (against spheres and the Tall Man).

Only parts of Phantasm 1 were dreams and the other reality. There was a kick back by Reggie putting his hands on the gate way. I suspect that was real but his memory was erased. We don't know what happens to him until we see through Mike's eyes that Reggie was stabbed by the Lady in Lavender/The Tall Man. The next time we see Reggie he is alive and well meaning he was never stabbed in the 1st place. Jody however is dead. Which means something happened after that point. Reggie saw what was normal reality because he didn't recall what he did witness. Mike saw what was behind it.

And let us not forget that in P3, REGGIE puts his hands on the posts of a Gate to prevent The Tall Man from coming though. And, as Reggie psychs himself up, JODY encourages him, saying "You can do it REG, you've done it before!"
Which raises another question...(On a related note...wasn't JODY holding a Sphere at the time? Was that *his* Sphere...?)

That is true Pumpmonkey and interesting observation. I would have to go back to that scene in phantasm III. I didn't notice it after the hundreds of times I watched it.. lol..Which just sparked another thought. What if Reggie sees and knows only what Mike wants him to see and know... Reggie doesn't remember anything from the first one and doesn't experience or witness anything again until he regroups with Mike in Part II. Which is odd. Reggie was so close to Morningside and you would of thought The Tall Man would have gotten him after all of those years. Instead nothing happens until Mike is released from the institution. Plus the Tall Man clears out towns and Morningside was more of a home base. He didn't clear that town out? It was fine when Reggie and Mike left with the exception of Reggie's family getting murdered. What if we aren't looking through Mike but Reggie? Reggie could have a screw loose or two lol...

@ grinchy = the thought that it is actually REGGIE who is having the visions/ experiencing the phantam was brought up before. I can't remember who, but it was pointed out in P4, at the end when THE TALL MAN says "Poor Ice Cream Man. Its all in his head."
Hmmm...

Pretty positive the Tall Man is referring to Mike when he says that.
