I'm a bit torn on this one since I like both DVDs a lot. The MGM DVD does have the original mono soundtrack, which adds a lot to the table for me. I haven't watched Phantasmagoria on the Anchor Bay disc but I hear that it's not the full version shown on the fifth disc of the Sphere Set.
I think in the end, the MGM discs wins it by a hair.
What are some of your thoughts on this?

The MGM version is I think alot better than the AnchorBay one was.
The MGM case and booklet inside is soo much nicer than the AnchorBay one
Anchorbay usualy does an amazing job on horror movie dvds but for this one I think both the P3 and P1 cases look phan made not very professional looking at all. Sort of a let down
MGM for me

Forgive me for being superficial, but the cover and menu of P1 MGM are better IMO. Plus, being a cinephile I am also a supplement maniac, and I cannot ignore the audio extras and Angus's introduction (Problem being it's unskippable) absent from the Anchor Bay disk. Are there any new deleted scenes in the new disk?
Most the stuff you can get with the Anchor Bay US, you can get with the sphere set (yes, the R1 disk only has the P1 parts of the documentary, which would be okay if Anchor Bay could release the rest of the series), where the image quality is also better (from what I have seen), so the median disk is probably the best, with MGM coming in second. Alas, I mainly know only from reviews.

the picture on the Anchor bay dvd is better but i like the extras on the MGM one. as in the mono soundtrack, Angus intro, sitting here at midnight by Bill Thornbury and everything else that is on it that is missing from the new one.

I would go with MGM. I don't really like the Anchor Bay cover.

You don't like the original theatrical poster artwork, Nat? Blasphemy. Although the new title treatment on Anchor Bay's disc bugs me. And how they used a P2 image of Angus on the spine. Of course, MGM used Oblivion stills on their cover AND spine. Gaw.

It's not the picture as it just doesn't look symetrical.... I prefer the interactive menus on AB as well. Posted by gomer on Yesterday at 10:02amYes, indeed... I don't have a digital tv,but it seems the picture on AB is not as dark and more crisp...

I like it fine, but it's no good for a DVD cover of the film, too much color contrast; reds, blues, and the big white border. MGM cover captures more horror feel and less nostalgia.
The ideal cover would either be predominantly black or predominantly white, I'd say have a slipcase of the Spacegate room over the MGM case, if it wouldn't be too much of a spoiler anyway...

I own both but I prefer the MGM release though I like the Anchor Bay coverart more. I do like the style that incorporates key elements of the movie rather than the single shot concept.

I'd go with both! Infact, today I got the MGM release of Phantasm at FYE. So now I have the Anchor Bay AND the MGM releases! Woo-hoo!

Personally, I think my Image Entertainment Signature Series Phantasm Laserdisc takes the prize. ;D It is truly one of my phavorite Phantasm releases.
Being the audiophile that I am, the Anchor Bay release does have the DTS audio track. However, after hearing it, I have come to the conclusion that there is no real difference between it and the DD5.1 track.
So, I guess I have to give my vote to the MGM release.

My only real problem with the Anchor Bay Release is the the packaging being too fragile, When I got to walmart to get my copy they only had 3 left, And all 3 of the slip covers were slightly ripped, And I picked all 3 them up and all 3 of the discs were dislodged from the holding center of the case, So when I opened my copy there the disc was loose from the holding center becuase the holding center was broken, My DVD plays fine and Ive watched it over 4 or 5 times but I have to lay the disc in the case carefully and hold the case carefully when I set it up because the holding center is broke and wont hold my DVD!, But I dont know if this would be Anchor Bay's fault or Walmarts, Anyone else have this problem?

^ that i believe is in part to that clearer/white type dvd case. those things are shoddy. the old black cases are usually better. must say i have had far more cd's with the center holder piece being broken on new cd's. then again i buy far more cd's than dvd's.

I have bought plenty of cds with the center holder broken, But the Anchor Bay Phantasm DVD was the first time I had ever bought a DVD that way.

Please forgive my ignorance as I know nothing about DVDs (Im kind of old school). But Id like to buy a PHANTASM box set for region 1. What would be the best one to buy and where is the best place to buy it?... The last time I saw P1 was on the big screen, so that should give you a clue as to how long its been since I have seen it. Also I have never seen P3.... It doesnt have to be a box set really, I could get them one by one, just as long as I get all 4......THX people!.

You can get 1, 3, and 4 from almost anywhere... from stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy, to online retailers like deepdiscount.com. Phantasm 2 isn't available in Region 1, so you have a couple of options as far as that goes. The main (and best) option is to import the Region 2 Sphere set and hack your DVD player so that it can play the discs. I don't have the Sphere set myself (yet), but I've heard time and time again that it is the BEST out there as far as owning the complete series of films. The other option is that you could buy all the Region 1 DVD's individually (aside from part 2), and then just import the Region 2 version of Phantasm 2... but you'd still have to hack your DVD player. Last option is to buy parts 1, 3, and 4 on DVD, and then buy Phantasm 2 on VHS. Hope this helps you some, pal.
