Here's an update about that long-rumored Secret Phantasm Project... if you've not been following this, it started shooting back in 2008 and a photo of Reggie Bannister as his character leaked in 2009. All cast and crew involved have been very hush about it and now, after several years, it seems as though it's losing steam as an original creation.
In a new interview with Big Daddy Horror Reviews, Reggie Bannister says the following about the project:
"We really don’t know what’s going on with that. For example Don Coscorelli is totally involved in a production right now called “John Dies at the End”. Paul Giamatti is in that film. We’ve talked about it, and we’ve gone out and screwed around with cameras for it. We’ve asked ourselves “How would we do this if we were to do this”."
When further pushed about the Secret Project, Reggie said the following:
"Like I said, we went out with cameras to see where it might go if it were to happen. We’d love to do another one. It all depends on scheduling, where everybody’s at, and where the money would come from, that’d be good."
My two cents on the matter is that "screwed around" is a pretty good way to describe what all they've filmed. As a pre-visualization for P5, the secret project is interesting. But as an original entry into the Phantasm universe, I fear it will fall woefully short of the four quality films we have, largely for not reuniting the Phantasm family in the same satisfying way we've come to expect after four films (and for technical reasons). It sounds as though Don Coscarelli may have shelved it as a standalone project or perhaps just that they're waiting until after JOHN DIES to do something with it.
Let me add to this update a comment Angus Scrimm made at this weekend's FRIGHTMARE convention about a new PHANTASM project:
"...I really don't want to see another one made, I feel the series works perfectly with the four originals, but I defer all questions about another one to the director and producer Don Coscarelli who tends to be very secretive about these things."
I never thought I would agree with that sentiment, but I absolutely do agree with it now... unless somehow Stephen Romano's scripts are back on the table. That would be marvelous.
