I could've sworn I posted this on Community several years ago when it was originally created, but I could not find the thread just now upon searching. So here it is again. Several years back, I cut together this alternate ending to P4 from a clever idea by our own Natalie Tomaszewski that attempts to provide an answer to this question: WHERE DID THE TALL MAN GO AFTER TAKING MIKE'S SPHERE? phantasmarchives.blogspot.com/2011/07/video-alternate-ending-to-phantasm.htmlOf course it can't top the "Only the wind" ending the film currently has, but there is something very appealing about ending P4 where it all began in Jebediah's lab. "And so it begins..."

Very cool, I liked this 'Alternate Ending' very much. Cool blog also, Dustin. I really liked the Hartman rendering from 'Bubba Hotep'. I was on the edge of my seat during 'Hotep', i just knew that Angus was going to step out of that hearse, lol!

I always assumed this is exactly what was intended by Don; that the Tall Man's timeline looped back into his own "birth". It's hard to interpret his emergence from the dimensional fork, holding the sphere, in any other way than he's just come from the final battle of Phantasm 4.
Disregarding for the moment whatever RaVager has in store for us, the ending of PIV (particularly this re-edit which makes the outcome more explicit) could be seen as a sort of final victory of the Tall Man, trapping him in a permanent time loop, never completing his evil goal but doomed to repeat his attempts over and over and over again, perhaps without even knowing it.
