I was looking over my Phantasm 1 DVD from MGM 1999 release the other night and i noticed 2 things. The first is that the booklet on the inside of the dvd shows Angus ghosted over a mausluem. I thought the mausoluem looked familiar and yes it is...from P2. The second is that the back touts Reggie Bannister being with Don, Angus, Mike, & Bill on the audio commentary, which he isn't. These are by no means earth shattering and these things are over 11 years old, but i just thought it interesting (ok, i don't have that much new stuff to talk about in Phantasm, gimme a break). This DVD is probably one of the best ever released on any film in my opinion.-Prymal

Prymal,
As always, great eye to catch those two things! You're right about the mausoleum being from Phantasm II. Look over the cover and spine images of the Tall Man and you might notice that they're from other Phantasm films as well, not the original.
I believe MGM's rationale in using Reggie's name in the audio commentary roll-call was that he DID provide commentary with Don overtop the Super8 home movies on the disc. The back-cover doesn't specifically state that the commentary is over the film, so it's a bit mis-leading.
The DVD booklet makes a HUGE error when it displays an example of the widescreen process. I've tried for years to write an article about it, but my words come across as confusing as the whole process is a little complicated. The point is this: MGM's DVD Booklet claims that you see more picture on the WIDESCREEN DVD than you do on previous FULLSCREEN VHS editions, which is actually incorrect. You see LESS with the DVD.

Prymal, please create your topics on the appropriate board. I have moved several of your topics over the last week or so. The "Last Threads" board is for things like last movie watched, etc.

I'd like to see that article in any form. I like reading complicated stuff. When reading legalese (not that I do that often ;D), I really get pissed off, because THEY make something so simple sound confusing; and THEY also put in ambiguous vocabulary so it can be forever interpreted differently to fit their ongoing schemes. But I won't get upset with your paper. ;D

Alright Vitamin, here you go. Here's a brief version of it. Okay, I'll sum it up here in as few words as possible. Simply put, Phantasm was not filmed in widescreen format. It was filmed in FULL FRAME format and had its widescreen bars applied later on for theatrical release, which IS how the film is supposed to be seen. So technically, the widescreen bars (or letterbox) actually cover up parts of the picture. 99% of the time, you'd be right to assume that Widescreen shows more than its full screen counterparts, but not with Phantasm (or with Evil Dead!). The difference is that Phantasm's Full Screen VHS wasn't cropped from the widescreen like most films are. The VHS simply removed the widescreen bars to reveal the picture they had been covering up. This extra screen-space often reveals goofs, such as crewmembers, boom mics and unfinished set portions. On the Phantasm VHS, you can actually see where the mausoleum set ends in the top of the frame and the warehouse ceiling above it. The MGM DVD Booklet tries to show the consumer how much MORE picture they will see on the DVD by showing a screengrab (the sphere scene) cropped from the widescreen release. THIS IS INCORRECT. The Phantasm VHS did not crop from the widescreen master. It actually showed much more than widescreen. See below for a picture of the booklet error and then a comparison between the VHS and Widescreen versions of the scene. The booklet says you see MORE picture in widescreen. The second image reveals that you actually see MUCH LESS in widescreen. Ya dig? This last image shows you three things. First, you have the FULL FRAME version of the shot. Then you have the CROPPED WIDESCREEN THEATRICAL version and third you have A HYPOTHETICAL CROPPED FULLSCREEN VERSION, the kind that MGM wants you to think has always existed on home video.

I would have never caught that what a great eye for things and it is one of the most entertaining movies ever, that is still very mysterious and intriguing.

Dustin- very interesting. I did not know that. I must have owned Phantasm on VHS at some point, but it's probably been almost 20 years so I don't remember the extra image at the top and bottom. I may have to hook up an old vhs machine and re-purchase a tape before they're all gone forever.
