I have always had a fascination with P3, especially its title variances. Before I saw the movie I found a cache of thrown away movie posters and billboards from a nearby Hollywood Video back in the mid-90's, one of them was a P3 poster. The glowing metallic, chiseled title design stuck in my head (no pun) but when I saw the movie on VHS for the first time I never understood why the title sequence simply read, Phantasm: Lord Of The Dead. Later on I saw the theatrical trailer and its title was, Phantasm III. Then the movie comes out on DVD and the box art has the full title, Phantasm III: Lord Of The Dead but the title sequence is reduced to Phantasm III. Perhaps Don or the studio marketing the film couldn't decide. Personally I would have been happy with the title sans the Lord Of The Dead subtitle but it seems to belong under the grandiose design on the red sky of the US poster.

Yeah, I never really saw the necessity or importance of the "Lord of the Dead" subtitle. It's unlike the previous 2 films which were simply Phantasm and Phantasm II, and it's also different from part 4 where the "IV" actually becomes part of the subtitle.

Ah, you know, i am a little different on this matter. I like subtitles under sequels. I am the type of guy that likes his chapters titled in the books i read...go figure, it doesn't really matter i guess, i just like things set apart.

But isn't title of Phantasm II, Phantasm II:The Ball is Back or is that just a tagline? On amazon, it actually forms part of the title. Arg, which is right??

I'm pretty positive it's just Phantasm II. Not sure why Amazon has the tagline in with the title.

I think "The Ball is Back!" is just a tagline. It's on the US theatrical poster and VHS box art and doesn't look significantly established as the imposing "Lord of the Dead" for P3. You'll remember from the theatrical trailer, "This summer, the ball is back!"
