Hello Phamily,
I honestly don't believe that Phantasm V will ever happen. For one thing, there's no way the story could logically go on from Phantasm IV unless P5 completely ignores that entry, sort of how PIII ignored PII a little. Secondly, Don always says that the funding is never there for a Phantasm V to actually happen, and Angus Scrimm pretty much confirmed that Don is very busy working on another film of his.
I was wondering if Don released an "Ultimate" Edition the original Phantasm, would that cover some of the funds in order to make a Phantasm V? Now, I'm not talking about a tawndry, cheap DVD with deleted scenes in the "Extras" section, I'm talking about the three hour cut of Phantasm with all of the scenes restored. Honestly, I don't believe Don when he claims that some of the footage from the three hour cut has been "lost" or "damaged", I think most of it is still around. Hell, I saw a terrifying scene posted by someone on this forum where The Tall Man scaled a tree after Mike, and Mike freaked out and jumped from the tree. It wouldn't be too difficult to restore the scenes and add music to them and it would pay off in the end, the Phans like myself would eat that up and have fun with it for weeks.
Is that too much to ask?

If there is a V, I'd say the worst thing that it should do is ignore Oblivion. After II saw a replacement Mike and a change in tone toward being more action oriented, and III veered completely off in tone and style, Oblivion brought things back full circle by being more somber and tying things right back into the original movie with all the archival scenes that are spliced in. We're back on track in tone and storyline...now let's get one last film to end the series and the story with, and show us where Reggie went. Show us what Mike's real fate is with the ball out of his head. Give the series a real conclusion.
I don't think sales of a super fancy edition of the original or the sequels would be likely to generate enough cash to finance a whole film production, though. The Phantasm audience is pretty limited, overall, I'm guessing. It doesn't have nearly the brand recognition of Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th, for example, so how many copies could realistically be sold, particularly in this day of declining DVD and Blu-Ray sales and internet piracy? A few thousand, if that? Even with the miniscule budgets the Phantasm films have been made on, I don't think the numbers would be there. That's just my guess, though...I'd be very happy to be proven wrong!

I feel that the franchise will eventually get a 5th film. It may not be now or within the next couple years, but someone will take interest in it. ANoES got a remake, Halloween got a remake and a terrible sequel, and Evil Dead is getting remade. Hollywood is losing its creativity and is running out of ideas. So they are targeting cult classics to remake to appeal to newer generations for more $$$.
It may have a different cast, different director and whatnot. But eventually something will be made. Even if it's 30 years down the road.

Here's an item from AintItCoolNews that discusses a unique way another horror film is trying to get funds together to get made: www.aintitcool.com/node/57306. The article even mentions this a possible way for Phantasm V to get the bucks raised so it can be made. It's a thought!
