Bah, it can't be done. We've all tried to get Universal to release it on DVD but they just don't! There is a way to re-wire your player to play region 2, and you can still find P2 on VHS, but that's all we got for now.

Well, I have a bootleg copy of Phantasm II I got from a rare DVD website on the internet (I won't say where). It's a 2-disc set which includes both the theatrical version and the workprint version. I also have the Anchor Bay R2 copy of Phantasm II just for the heck of it. Still, I don't see why Universal and Anchor Bay can't come to an agreement. I guess the only best way to get P2 on DVD is to include it in our letters to Anchor Bay.

I'll give you the most simple answer ever: Universal Studios simply wants to sit on the film for the time being. Anchor Bay can't get it away from them and I've heard Don say he's called them up before and gotten nowhere time and time again.
Any version regardless of region that contains the workprint is a bootleg.

Let's say that Universal does release it someday. It'll probably be a barebones release like their releases of Army of Darkness, Halloween II, Halloween III, etc.
I'd rather have someone like Anchor Bay put it out if they could ever secure the rights(we can dream) but a barebones DVD would be better than nothing.
Until then, I'm perfectly content with my VHS & region 2 copies.

My opinion: We should write to Universal Home Entertainment and tell them to get along with Anchor Bay and both release Phantasm II. If that's not a good idea then tell them to give the rights to Anchor Bay. Here's the address:
Universal Home Entertainment 100 Universal City Plaza Universal City, CA 91608
But at this point I'm willing for either one to release the film on DVD. And if it's Universal, I just hope this time they'll have cool new features, a 5.1 and DTS track, trailer, and tv spots.

I just don't understand why they won't give those rights up or release it themselves .
I would have thought the releases of P1 and P3 and even P4 for that matter would have shown there is enough interest.

I'm thinking that they want an arm & a leg for the rights or something or are just holding onto them to be jerks.
The Maniac Cop trilogy is kind of in the same boat since there are a few region 1 releases of the first & third flicks but no region 1 release of the second one. First Look Entertainment owns the second & third movies & have actually put out the third movie but not the second. I hear that they want a lot of money for the rights to it.

This is just a theory, but I went to see The Pirates Who Don't Anything: A Veggietales Movie. The thing is that the film was released under Universal and the company who did the animation was Starz Media. And as you know Starz owns Anchor Bay. In a way, Universal NOW has no choice but consider returning the favor to Starz by giving them the Phantasm II rights to Anchor Bay.

Just a thought, but maybe Univeral wont give up the rights because they are waiting for the release of FIVE to come out before they release two and cash in on it? Probably not,but who knows? I have two on VHS too,but would love a dvd copy.
