ABOUT P2 FROM THE BOX SET:
"Video quality on Phantasm II is slightly suspect as with the first. Not bad, by any stretch of the imagination, but could definitely use a little work. Some scenes fare better than others, and the worst amounts too some drab or muted colors and some minor print damage. Good not great and I wouldn't hesitate to say that there might even be a higher quality version on the way. Not to mention the fact that the film begins with a full frame title sequence and then switches over to an anamorphic image of about 1.77:1 to 1.85:1. Which begs the question, are we presented with a true anamorphic image here? I have my suspicions, this may be a modified full frame transfer set as an anamorphic widescreen image, but I'm not 100% sure. Audio options include German 2.0 and 5.1 and English 2.0. Oddly enough, the 2.0 track is straight stereo, unlike the first Phantasm which was stereo surround. "

Well... it is true but understand that the review you reference is describing a bootleg Phantasm DVD boxset limited to 2,000 pieces and sold from a well-known bootleg website. The review in it's entirety can be read here: www.monstersatplay.com/review/dvd/p/phantasmquadrilogy.phpWhile I could offer my own analysis of the video quality of Phantasm II as released by Anchor Bay as part of the legit Phantasm R2 Boxset, I'll borrow words from 'Slarek' of DVDoutside.co.uk, "Some film grain is evident, but otherwise this anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer is very nice indeed, with a good level of detail, nice colour reproduction and contrast and bang-on black levels, showcasing well Daryn Okada's lighting and Philip Duffin's production design."The review in it's entirety can be found here: www.dvdoutsider.co.uk/dvd/reviews/p/phantasm_sphere.html

Dustin,
Thanks.
By the way, is the DIGI-PACK BOX-SET VERSION of PHANTASM II lacking specks or spots on the image? I don't care about grain, but debris and specks: yes.
So we can easily assume that P2 and P4 are PRESERVED FOREVER, even if Region 2. Ain't it?

I'm not sure if there is confusion here over this.... but the Digipack boxset pictured above and the Sphere boxset contain the same discs. The Sphere was just premium edition packaging for those who wanted to pay the extra dough for it.

Let me put it this way. The R2 Anchor Bay boxset releases from 2005 look incredible.
I don't think I've ever met anyone who disagrees with that. Now the single-releases from Anchor Bay UK seem to be shoddy, but if you go with the boxset, you'll be satisfied.

These films have never been perfect, not even at their respective premieres. Imperfection is part of the charm of celluloid film, in my opinion. It's why most cinema purists strongly prefer celluloid to digital.

The quality is awful! All throughout the print flecks and specks would appear, plus coffee rings, squashed bugs and all sorts of stuff!
