Did John Klyza take over Phantasm.com, or just start his own personal sub-section Phantasm Secrets on it?

Using After Effects is just fine. It's not the tool, it's the artist.

IMDB.com is as reliable as any other database when it comes to films that have already been released. But for any pre-production or currently filming productions, it's really not very accurate, mainly because the information is always changing until a film is finally finished and released.

It's the last shot that bugs me most. That image of the massive silver sphere looming overhead should be like an MC Escher picture, reflecting Reggie and all of the surrounding area. It just looked like a gray blob in the sky.
Incidentally I had a Big Ball in a Phantasm fan fic I wrote. It was called the Mothersphere and it chased the Battlecuda from the red planet, thru a towering dimensional fork and thru the streets of Mike's hometown in the finale.

It just looked like a gray blob in the sky. That struck me too. The rendering of the surface of the "megasphere" seems to be matte or brushed rather than reflective like the other orbs in the movies. I still think it will be fixed. Hopefully someone on the crew had the foresight to get up on a cherry-picker with a wide-angle lens and take a few photos in the opposite direction to get the reflection mapping right.

Is that actually a giant sphere, or a trick of perspective? My eyes initially saw it as a sphere hovering with the camera up close to it, while Reggie is more in the background, so he appears small and the sphere huge. I can make my brain see it both ways upon repeat viewings, however...

I see it too, but if you look closely at the HD version on YT, you can see the branches of one tree intersecting between us and the sphere, so it is supposed to be a giant orb. Reggie's backpedaling and incredulous gestures are a response to it. It is partially the lack of reflections of the landscape that makes it look like it could be smaller. EDIT: the birds also cross in front of it

EDIT: the birds also cross in front of it It could very well be that they release early effects shots to get exactly this kind of constructive feedback. Sometimes when working on a project, you become too close to it, and can't see flaws and problems. The only way to get around this, is to let the project "cool" for a time and return to it with fresh eyes. If however you have a deadline to meet, and don't have time for the cooling process, then showing it to others who aren't close to the project and getting feedback from them can give you an unbiased and clear perspective.

Jjrakman, you just echoed advice I give my classes about writing, except you're of course discussing film/effects! The same principle applies, however! (I teach college composition.)

I see Bill Thornbury's facebook is deactivated. Perhaps to avoid the influx of fan comments?

I see Bill Thornbury's facebook is deactivated. Perhaps to avoid the influx of fan comments? Yeah, can't really blame the guy. His life is so oriented toward his music, faith, teaching career and family right now. He never seems to mind coming back to Phantasm for new films or conventions, but it's a very, very small part of his life.
