I mean with all honesty, do you really think that a fifth Phantasm film will be made anytime soon? And by anytime soon, I mean within a few years.
I can't help but be a little skeptical.
I mean we've had no official word. At all. At best, we kinda sorta hear that it's in preproduction. And while that's good, it just seems like it could turn into nothing. I don't know, I'm feeling a little pessimistic about it right now.
Baldwin, in the latest podcast, got me a little more concerned as well. Aside from his HILARIOUSNESS, I sort of churned a little when he said something about how "he didn't care" in regards to this topic. While I'm sure he was being facetious, I thought maybe there was a little bit of a seriousness about it.
On top of everything, there's the annoying/everlasting writer's strike. So even if things were starting to get rolling, that d**n thing is blocking all progress anyway.
And I mean there is just nothing really positive on the horizon as far as I can see. It just saddens me that I've begun to lose hope.
I am not blaming anyone for this. I'm sure Don is doing all he can, as well as the other parties involved. I'm not angry at anyone. Just impatient I suppose.
I want nothing more than Phantasm 5 to happen. I consider myself one of its top supporters. But as each day, week, month passes... I begin to doubt things more and more.
So my question for all of you is, do you honestly expect to see a Phantasm 5? This is NOT a do you want to see a Phantasm 5. We all want to see it. But do you EXPECT to see it?

I'd hate to say it, but I've been starting to lose hope. I do not expect to see it until I actually see it.

Considering Anchor Bay/Starz interest in the series...yes. Considering Coscarelli's interest...yes. Considering that there's a script and there's been a reading...yes.
Yes, I do expect to see it. Even if Baldwin doesn't care and decided not to do it...it's not like they haven't recast the role before (it would be kind of cool if LeGros jumped back in again). The only real hold up is probably the writer's strike (God, WHEN will it END!!!!).
I will actually be surprised if P5 doesn't happen...

Feh, it probably won't be coming this year as IMDB says, but I don't think it would be that hard in a few years time considering the points that Dulcimerdude mentioned

I'm not going to try and pep anyone into thinking P5 will happen... but I will point this out.
It's documented that the cast and crew of each Phantasm movie since number II think there's never going to be another one. They said no more after II. They said no more after III. And they shouted from the rooftops that there would be no more after Oblivion. Don and the cast/crew swore up and down that Oblivion was going to be the final Phantasm. And here we are with a polished script, a thoroughly filmed cast reading, visual effects tests and numerous public comments about it.
We're hardly the first batch of phans worried that another one will never be made. But that's not to say we should take hope in that and keep the faith because P5 is far from happening.
But it's also far from not being a real possibility.
edit: And no one believe anything you see on IMDB Phantasm V page. I made that page myself and will fill it with whatever garbage is necessary to keep it online (the IMDB wants to take it down every few months unless I produce news of progress).

the writers strike is making progress as many of the major film distibutors like lions gate have agreed to some of their terms. phantasm 5 in celluliod would be great! if we only get it in print via comic or graphic novel i will accept this as well... it will happen, and it would be great if baldwin was in this installment as well but i will accept legros as long as they have the hemi cuda!!! after all phantasm is the lord of the cudas!

Where is your evidence of Anchor Bay/Starz being interested in anything other than Phantasm DVDs? I'll give you the one on Don... even though he's never really come out and expressed a huge desire to make a fifth in the series (that I know of). I think your best argument is the cast reading. That is pretty huge. Very nice point there. But you should bite your tongue about recasting the role of Mike. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY has any business with that role other than Baldwin himself. I have to strongly disagree about bringing LeGros back also. It would just be too f-ed up continuity wise. Besides, I really doubt that Don would let anyone else have the part anyway. I mean the only reason Baldwin wasn't in P2 was because of the studio. If P5 happens, it'll be all in Don's hands, and he won't give that role to anyone else (if I was a betting man).

Fact: Don said that Anchor Bay was looking to finance P5 in a 2007 interview with IFMagazine.
Yeah but Don is a weirdie that way. He's super quiet and keeps to himself about a lot of projects. He has said publicly that he wants to do a fifth Phantasm and that it's just a matter of timing and money. (See Dread Central Podcast interview with Don from 2007 for example)
I can't remember if this made it into the podcast or not... but Baldwin definitely wants to do a part five. He told me so himself. He said it would be a lot of fun, like one big party. If he wasn't interested in doing it, he wouldn't have traveled from Texas to California to take part in that filmed cast reading. He really digs the new script too. Come to think of it, I think I did cut that from the final edit.
No wait, I left some of that in the final edit. He said he'd even consider producing Stephen's new script if it gets off the ground. Where are you guys getting this Baldwin doesn't care crap from? Listen to the third show. It's all there.

Dustin, I went back and listened to the Podcast again, and this was the part I was talking about... Baldwin says something to the effect of "everyone wants Phantasm 5 to happen so bad that they don't want to piss anyone off... I'm the only person that doesn't care... and when I say I don't care, I mean I REALLY don't care."
Obviously that's a little paraphrased, but you get what I mean. Initially when I heard that, I guess I sort of took it as Baldwin didn't care if he pissed people off to the point where Phantasm 5 didn't happen. Now as I think about it a little more, I suppose I may have been off in that assumption. My apologies. But do you understand why someone could come to that impression upon hearing it? Or am I just insane?
Also, thanks for the reminder about Don commenting on Anchor Bay looking to finance P5. I guess it completely slipped my mind.

I see how you could've taken that wrong, Gopher. But Michael really meant that he didn't care about being careful with his words like everyone else. He just likes to speak his mind freely.

www.phantasmarchives.net/willp5happen.wavThis is your tease for Episode 004 of the Phantasm Archives podcast which as I've said before, is a leftovers episode. It'll feature more Baldwin, more Klyza and more Romano that hasn't previously been heard. In the clip above, Michael responds to my question: "Do you honestly expect P5 to happen?" Considering how honest Michael has been to me otherwise.... I think we can really trust his answer.
