Well, if this wasn't an age awareness wake up call, I was checking out the TCM schedule tonight and there was Terminator on the schedule: www.tcm.com/thismonth/article/?cid=184939I've been waiting for TCM to "turn the corner" and start infusing more mid 70' and 80's flicks (action,sci-fi,horror) into their schedule, and it seems like they might be starting to do this. I can see Phantasm being shown on TCM, easily. I like TCM's approach in presenting movies. You're not bashed over the head with full throttle, loud lead ins like TNT or FX. Instead, TCM has a warm cozy feel to it, and Robert Osbourne's set ups are quite informative. You also develop an appreciation for all genres of film (I like Westerns alot now). It's easy to come to the realization that today's great directors aren't original at all, but are respectfully borrowing and elaborating on an idea that has been already established many eons ago. I haven't owned a movie station in about 15 years and its nice to start seeing some of my "classics" uncut on the tele. Rolllerball (1975) is on tonight as well (great sci-fi). I figure this thread can be used to give "heads up" on cool movies to everyone. Or just your general impressions of TCM.

I adore Turner Classic Movies. They always respect the letterbox, never censor and never show commercials.
Plus Robert Osbourne was very kind to Phantasm in his 1979 review. AVCO Embassy gave him his own private screening. Years later, Bill Thornbury ran into him at somewhere like a grocery store, and Robert told him about how scared he was during the private screening. He says he almost fled the theater in certain parts!

Well, I don't like to resurrect my own thread like this, but, you just keep uncovering stuff when watching the old classics. Just watched:
Forbidden Planet (1956)-an amazing science fiction picture with outstanding sound and visuals.
I noticed a few interesting things that would appeal to Star Trek and Halloween fans.
1) The transport (beam me up Scotty room) idea was directly taken from this movie.
2) In Halloween, when Lindsey was watching "The Thing" and Tommy was whispering trying to scare her; those weird sounds from the movie she was watching came from Forbidden Planet.
3) I also think the opening scene in JC's "The Thing" (showing the half crescent earth with the space ship approaching) might be influenced by this picture.
The special effects are right on par with 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it came out 15 years prior. Pretty amazing.
Just a little info for anyone interested.

Well done. And what about the story line concerning "the investigation of the disappearance of a colony that settled there..." Sound familiar? Looks like I'll be picking this one up for my library. Cameron to Spielberg....highly important. I agree on the Anne Francis thing. There definitely was a formula back then. I agree with it 100%. ME WANT PRETTY BLONDE, 50'S STYLE (put caveman sounds here).

Just wanted to let you guys/gals know that there are some pretty important "Classics" coming up:
The Birds (1963) - Check out the special effects in this. April 1st 8p.m.
The Long Riders (1980) - I've seen this. From the director of "The Warriors". Excellent western that casts real life brothers to portray famous gangs of the "old west". Great special effects with a superb music score by Ry Cooder. April 2nd @ 10 pm
Psycho (1960) - If your a fan of slasher films (Halloween), check this out. It came out almost 50 years ago! April 4th @ 9:30 a.m. or April 1st @ 12:30 A.M.
King Kong (1933) - I haven't seen this yet. A landmark film. April 7th 8 p.m.
The Thing From Another World (1951) - Though John Carpenter based his Thing off the short story, this film probably made a great impact on him. I'm looking forward to this. April 11th @ 3:30 a.m. (Record it!)

Also The Thing from Another World DVD has commentary from Carpenter on on how this film had such a great influence. Well worth getting

Thought I'd revive this baby. I noticed some parallels to Phantasm and Halloween while watching
-Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)-
the other night.
There is one scene where the protagonist is trying to sneak into the cellar of a house via a basement window. Once he smashes the window he then proceeds to light a match to view and investigate his surroundings. Sound familiar? This movie also contains the line "We've (I've) been waiting for you!"
The town in this movie is called Santa Mira, which was the name of the town in Halloween 3: Season of the Witch.
Just a little FYI...

I LOVE Halloween 3. One of my all time favorite movies... ever.
I also love TCM. The channel introduced me to classic cinema at a young age. During the summers when there was nothing else better to do, I would watch movies like "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" and "Rear Window." Those were the days.

HHSC is grand as well, though I much prefer Whatever Happened To Baby Jane as those two go together. I sorely miss the free cable from my old apartment as I got to watch TCM. NOw... no TCM.

I love TCM.
It was actually TCM that got me into The Bad News Bears about seven years ago.
I grew up in the '80s, and in the early '80s TBNB was a staple on cable. But, as a young kid, the last thing I wanted to do was watch a movie about other kids...and one set in the cheeseball '70s to boot (it would still be about ten more years before it would be cool to be '70s).
Anyways, one night in October of 2002, I was flipping channels with my nephew one night, and I saw that it was on TCM. Brendan was in Little League at the time, so I thought he'd like it.
But, I was the one who got into the movie. ;D
As I watched it, I realized that this was a movie for adults that just happened to have kids in it. And, it was so good it was practically Shakesperian.
Thanks, TCM! ;D
