I have a question. We know MGM was willing enough to give the rights of Phantasm I to Anchor Bay, and they themselves put out a barebones DVD of Phantasm IV, but what about Phantasm III? Did MGM own the rights prior to Anchor Bay, and if so why didn't they put out a DVD before them like they did with the original? If they did not own the rights then who did?

MGM only owned the rights to distribute Phantasm as long as Don let them. Once the rights ran out, they could no longer print discs. Don then sold the rights to Anchor Bay since he's worked with them many times before.
MGM never had a stake in P3.

So was Don himself the sole owner of the rights to P3 until recently, but didn't have the means to distribute it?

I dunno, but I'm mighty happy with the excellent Anchor Bay Phantasm III DVD. Me too. I love it.

i might have to listen to it again. but i could have sworn that reggie told the dead pit guys that P3 was done by universal as part of a two picture deal with don. after P2 came out, they decided to do another one, but when the movie was finished, they just decided to not release it at all. that's when another studio came in and agreed to release it on video only. but i believe the vhs copy was done by universal when it came out on video. i don't even know how that works.

I'll never forget going to a rough cut research screening of P3 at the Warner Bros. studio lot sometime in late 93' or early 94' to determine if it was going to be released to theatres or not. I think it came out in a few states, but not anything like P2's wide release. The VHS & laserdisc release was indeed Universal.
