Do you think Phantasm II would have been a vastly different film if A. Michael Baldwin had been involved, and Universal had not?
Did the suits/studio have a big impact on this film? Or did Don stay 100% true to his creative vision?
What do you guys think might have been different?

I dunno, seeing as how Don's later movie Bubba Ho Tep was supposed to be such a campy, out-there film (I haven't seen it myself yet), but I suspect that if Universal hadn't been involved some of the stuff we love would be lost.
It just seems that Phantasm 1 was such a melancholy sort of subtle film and Phantasm 2 was the quintessential 80s blockbuster horror, and I believe Universal could have been responsible in part for that. However I think if Baldwin were allowed to stay in the Mike role there would be a better balance between the first and second parts, LeGros was too much of a jock type whereas Baldwin could have stayed in rebel (Now a vengeful rebel) role.

well going by the workprint version some scenes might have been different and i am pretty sure it would have had more dream like quality to it. remember Dustin posting something about Universal no dream rule ?

I dont know how different a flim it would be? But to me, it would have been WAAAAAY better all the way around if we could have had A. Michael B. If he would have been allowed to play "HIS" role it would have been lightyears ahead of what PII is with LeGros. As I have said before I was sick in 88 when I found out. I waited 9 years for this...what a rip off! And I dont blame Michael when he calls it S#!T !

The film was fine to me. The only thing that bugs me is why it's not out on DVD yet. Is Universal testing us or are they waiting fo the right moment?

Universal probably doesn't think it'll turn a profit on DVD despite its pretty decent-sized following. And I'm sure they want too much for the rights. Reminds me a lot of why Maniac Cop 2 more than likely isn't on DVD over here yet as well. I wish Blue Underground could get the rights to it because I know Bill would give us one hell of a great release.

It's just hard for me to see P2 with Baldwin in it. Maybe because I saw P2 before any of the other philms.
I just couldn't picture Baldwin running around with a flame thrower and all.

I think it would have been most different if they would have let Don have his way with the film. Universal was too restrictive with dreams and such. Don said that Universal told him that the audience had to know where it was and what was going on at all times, it just totally goes against the grain of the Phantasm MO. I saw P2 at 5 years old, so it would be hard to see A.M.B. in the role. I love how don edited the footage for P3 between what was LeGros and Liz. Cut here, put in A.M.B. there, another cut here. I found it kind of funny when I first saw it, now it just meshes with everything else. Speaking of LeGros, has anyone noticed that in the comic sometimes Mike looks like J. LeGros and other times he looks like A.M.B.?

It would have been more successful if he was in it. ( I don't mean to offend ).
A lot of us grew up with Mike, and we were around 17 to 23 years of age at the time of release of P2. It was money in the bank. I think sabotage was involved...
Anytime I can't fall asleep I just put in P2. Knocks me out in about 5 minutes. Sorry...

I'll give you that there is a stretch in P2 that really makes me tired. It begins with Liz and her grandma going to bury her grandad and doesn't end until we see Mike and Reggie show back up.

I honestly liked the time with Liz, gave us more insight and made her seem like less of a token love-interest. The scenes with Reg and Mike were good, but I didn't really dig the Blade-Runner style narration, it really was the best after the interlude with Liz when they began exploring the Perigord graveyard.

I always found the studio not having A. Michael Baldwin return in the sequel a real shame. True the director was forced into a lot of changes for the writing and filming of most of it. It seems like the best choice between Mike and Reggie since he would be easier to replace and "age" then getting another actor to play Reggie. James did a great job, but Baldwin will always be Mike in my mind. I thought he would of looked better beside the character of Liz even. Maybe they would of had better chemistry or something. At least they tried editing it for part III to make it look as though Baldwin never left the series. Real shame through since it would of been interesting to see him at all different stages in his life. During the 80's everyone had to be petty, I think Baldwin had a certain look to him that made him seem normal and like the kid next door. Who knows, maybe the movie would of been even better...

I kinda don't like how they pulled off the switch in PIII, it would have been okay to initially keep LeGros and attribute the actor change to weight loss during the coma (Movie logic )

I would've rather had Mike play Mike, as I have stated several times before, if for no other reason than continuity sake. How different it might've been can only be guessed at. We can almost flip this question and dare I even ask this, how would've it been without the Regman, or without Angus as the Tall Man.

I think it would be a lot different. Every actor performs differently. Since we all grew watching James play Mike in Phantasm II, I'm not sure about you all, but I would find it wierd/different seeing Michael with a flame thrower and digging up graves, and everything else James did.

See, I see people say this all the time... and I don't really get it. I mean in P1, don't we see a young Mike Pearson use guns, drive a Cuda, wield a knife, and blow a hole in his door with a shotgun shell and a hammer? If anything, I find A. Michael Baldwin's portrayal of Mike as the "bad*ss" between the two.

I can see Michael doing these things, just his performance would be the difference.
