But I thought the Tall Man just keeps coming back. He cannot die. They tried multiple times, four by my count, and he never dies. Why would he want Mike to take his place when he will just try to run? Why did he want Mike in the first place?

Because Mike has mental powers. The Tall Man sees this in him, he sees his potential. Why do a job alone, when you can get someone to do it as well, if not better.

The Tall Man doesn't see it in him, he put it in him. The Tall Man was transforming him into his kind, but why? My opinion is that he wants to retire to a beach house with spheres serving him drinks while he's laying out on the beach getting a tan. ;D

Now THAT is a humorous mental picture! And the dwarves frolicking and flopping around in the water.

I have some ideas about how Phantasm V should be myself. I've not totally thought them through, but basically, after Reggie steps through the dimensional gate, he wakes up, in a parallel of the ending of Phantasm. Suddenly he's in a different life where the Tall Man seemingly doesn't exist. He goes to Mike to talk to him about it and Mike doesn't believe him, telling him it was only a dream.
This time line is a continuation of the "It's just the wind" timeline that begins at the end of Phantasm IV.
Also a part of this timeline is a descendant of Jebediah Morningside (or is he?) who is running the mortuary in Morningside. Reggie's family, who was killed in Phantasm II, are alive again and maybe, despite the events of the previous movies seemingly not happening, Reggie harbors a severe hatred and fear of Morningside's descendant.

I think the biggest obstacle standing in the way of a new Phantasm is the fact that the storyline has become so involved and complex by the end of IV that only a viewer who has seen all of the previous films up to this point is likely to able to understand all the characters' different motivations and back stories. Any sequel that picks up immediately after Reggie walks through that spacegate to God-knows-where would, right off the bat, restrict its audience to a minimum core of Phans, and thus cripple its chances at any kind of financial and popular success. As much as I'd love to see the story pick up where it left off, I would rather see the movie succeed so we may have more Phantasm in the future.
I suppose one way to make the movie accessible to newcomers would be to introduce some major new characters who become embroiled in Reggie's quest to kill the Tall Man and rescue Mike, (similar to Liz in Phantasm II)> The main purpose of the new characters (aside from their own character arcs) would be to ask the questions that audience need answered. That way, instead of the half-hour long recap that would otherwise be required to explain what the hell is going on, the background to the films could be explained by way of narrative exposition in parallel to the new developments in the plot , thus wasting a minimum of screen time on recaps (excepting flashbacks), as well as introducing a new generation of actors and phans to the series.

Thanks. You know, I just re-read my first two posts in this thread, and I must say... I still think they're darn good! Sorry to toot my own horn here, haha.

I had a strange idea for Phantasm V last night. This might be too out there even for the Phantasm world, but has anyone considered bringing back James Legros? What if, in part V (as many have suggested) Mike (AMB) becomes the new Tall Man, but Reggie is able to pull a Mike (JL) from an alternate dimension/reality to join him in his fight? Best of both worlds: Mike as good guy and bad guy, and it could explain the casting change of part II with a Mike from an alternate timeline.
Obviously, this is extremely unlikely and more than a little goofy, but the idea still had me grinning. ;D

One was Good Mike and the other was Bad Mike. I think I have video of Baldwin discussing this at a Q&A from last year. Might post it.

Sorry hemicuda, but I find that kinda goofy. I see the film taking place after OblIVion and taking place in a masoleum of sorts on the Red Planet (where else would the Tall Man go now that he has Mike's sphere?) .

Oh, it's definitely goofy but come on, Phantasm is a goofy series! And I say that as a big phan myself.
They've already established alternate dimensions and implied alternate timelines so in my mind, it wouldn't be that big of a stretch, and apparently it's an idea that has been considered.
But, casting changes have always seemed to bug me more than others. I can understand wanting to leave the multiple Mikes in the past too.

So Dustin, in your opinion, do you think Legros would be down for a return to the Phantasm universe?

Do I think James would be down for P5? Tough to say, really.
Here is the video where Michael, Angus and Reggie discuss James and P5.
