Do you think both beings are similar? and did the original Phantasm influenced "A Nightmare on Elm Street"?

It's possible that NOES was influenced by Phantasm. Mostly in the dream sequences.
Similarities between Tally and Freddy are pretty small. Freddy kills children/teenagers as a revenge, Tally just... kills.
Welcome once again Harry, keep posting.

Yeah I don't see many similarities between the two characters. Freddy is loud, wise-cracking, and more brutal in his killing. The Tall Man is... completely the opposite.
I do, however, think that Phantasm may have influenced NOES.

They're both horror icons. I know that! But seriously, they're both mysterious. You don't know when or where they'll pop out, you don't know how they gonna kill their victims, and it's their powers. Their powers are somewhat supernatural. For example, Freddy can form into anything or anyone while The Tall Man uses his mind to control things.

Freddy is commercialized while the Tall Man is underground and a cult icon. They should never be mentioned in the same sentence.

Freddy is commercialized while the Tall Man is underground and a cult icon. They should never be mentioned in the same sentence. I disagree. While NOES is certainly more out in the open, Freddy is still a cultish figure. Granted, Phantasm is pure cult. When you have a certain niche of fans that enjoy films like NOES, Phantasm, Dead series, F13, no matter how mainstream they are, it's still a cult film.

Tall man could kick Freddy's ass. I don't think the two are really "compatible" - they belong in totally separate universes. The nature of Freddy and his powers has never even been dealt with, they would seem to be wholly supernatural/demonic, without any attempt to connect them with reality or logic. The Tall Man's powers, on the other hand, seem to belong to a form of utterly alien technology ("alien" in the sense of "other", "outlandish"), which gives him the ability to bend timespace, teleport matter and reanimate the dead, amongst other things. His powers are "magical" only insofar as they are so far beyond our current level of scientific understanding that we cannot grasp the concepts, whereas Freddy's are supernatural in the classical "spiritual" sense.

OblivionGoon I hear what your saying. I think i'm sort of biased. I think they destroyed Freddy after the 2nd film and I disliked him after that. He became a kids toy instead of a scarry icon like he was intended to be.

First, I'd like to mention that Phantasm & A Nightmare on Elm Street are my two favorite horror franchices.
Secondly, being a big Nightmare fan, Wes Craven based Freddy on both a bully growing up and a creepy guy who staired at him from the street when he was little; I won't get into it but it was rather eerie. Phantasm was never mentioned, but I do recall sever influences being referenced in the documentary on the box-set. It's possible it contributed but I doubt it was a major influance.
And regarding Freddy VS TTM, I TOTALLY agree with MrsLeGros on the matter; before saw that post I probobly would have posted the same thing regarding such. If they HAD to fight though, it's still a tough call. The Tall Man became less and less physical because of Angus' age so his potential powers are a tad arguable if ou want to average things out, and Freddy's were based on each films' budget basicly. They can do a lot of the same stuff, but if you remove regeneration it's pretty much whoever draws first blood that wins, and Freddy does have a claw...

Freddy...wow..well i have to say Freddy kinda scared the bejesus outta my kids but not me.. to me Freddy was just some dude that was totally wronged and came back to extract revenge on those who where responsible (i am speaking of the first few Freddy's I honestly havent seen many that were very memorable) have at me LOL But the Tallman is still being dissected in my mind, this guy is absolutely facinating and speaking character wise could still take many different directions..nobody really knows yet what this could lead up to, which makes it all the more intriguing..where as with Freddy, it's already given....PEACE

Watched the original Nightmare on Elm St. recently and it did strike me how much it borrowed from Phantasm conceptually.

I saw the trailer to the new NOES on Myspace. It looks pretty good. It comes out April 30th next year.

I don't like that they are trying to make Freddy sympathetic. Like, at the beginning of the trailer he's saying "What is it you think I did?" so the way I see it there are two ways they can go: 1. Freddy is innocent, so it's a revenge film, 2. Freddy is actually guilty and there's some lame third-act twist. Either way, I'm not a fan of that aspect. I like Jackie Earle Haley playing Freddy, but I don't like that pre-burn Freddy isn't already a psychopath. Not a fan of sympathetic horror villains.
Also, a lot of the scenes seemed straight lifted from the original, like the bathtub scene.
I'll still see it for Haley's performance but I imagine it will turn out like most all of the other recent horror remakes (Texas Chainsaw, Last House on the Left, Hills Have Eyes etc.) -competently made but completely devoid of originality, charm and grit.

I'm going to give it a chance though. Just like with the Halloween remake. But that had the same click. Zombie made us, or at least me, feel sorry for Michael by showing us how he grew up, poorly raised.
