A novel isn't a race to the end, though. It doesn't matter how long it takes you to finish it. Even just picking it up and reading a page or two every couple of days is fine. Novels that take the longest to read are usually the best: because it's with you for so long, you become more invested in it and it becomes almost like a comfort blanket you can turn to when you're tired or bored. I've just got done reading Lord of the Ring and it took me about three months all-told (I read some other stuff in-between Fellowship and Two Towers) and it was a great experience; so much so, that when I finally did finish it, it was sad, like losing an old friend. Touché...well put my friend

SPOILER ALERT (MAYBE).....DOES IT REALLY MATTER?
Though I saw a blend of some of my favorite movies like Predator (even before the reference), Aliens, Dawn of the Dead, and Escape From New York; the monkey business at the end got a little ridiculous (the hero? ;D). It definitely had enough ideas to springboard into something much greater. There obviously would have been several rewrites.
Didn't know he was unofficially involved in True Romance.

Actually, Phantasm on an audio book ( w/special effect sound bites from the movie, as well as the actors reading their parts??!!!) would be very cool. Way back in the late 90's i bought an audio book from a Star Wars novel and it was pretty neat. They had Billy Dee Williams do his character Lando and Ian Mcdiarmid/the emperor, and Anthony Daniels/c-3po, even had some nifty sound bites from the movies. Again, i realize this is not the way Phantasm was intended to be, but it still has enough class to lend dignity to the characters and Coscarelli's vision, in my humble opinion.

I just got around to reading this. I don't know if it's the "true" script since I haven't seen it before (there could be other scripts floating around taking Avary's name. I'm just including all possibilities.). I just downloaded the script from the link phantasm2009 posted and please don't bring out the pitchforks, but I didn't really like it much for it being a "Phantasm" movie. Don't get me wrong, it's a good story. However, I feel that it became more of a zombie - survival story. To me, it just does not seem "Phantasm-esque". The Tall Man appeared too comical, and it became more Reggie's story, and barely any Mike, when really Phantasm is the story of Mike. It's about his transformation. But if that were to be made into a movie, watching all 5 consecutively, the Phantasm's End would really stand out. It would go from Mike discovering what's happening to him to Reggie fighting alongside military operations fighting zombies Left 4 Dead style.

This truly is one of the drafts that Roger Avary wrote for Phantasm 2013 and in my opinion, it is dreadful. Dreadful like everything he ever wrote for Phantasm. No other draft or version of this project is any better than the last. In fact, this particular one is the bottom worst because Mike is M.I.A. where previously he was just a VERY minor character, albeit still around. I've wanted to voice my own thoughts on Avary's work for years now, but have held back largely because it wouldn't feel right complaining about a script most fans aren't able to even read. I hope Stephen Romano's scripts one day reach the fanbase - he has a respect and fondness for the original and it shows in his work. His sequel and remake are everything this script was not.

Even though this is the only script I have read, comparing it to Coscarelli's films, it really is weak.
But I would love to read Romano's work. I used to talk with him and read some of his work. He really is a great writer (and artist, might I add). He really does appreciate the original series.

Interesting comments from the CHUD message board from user SD BOB PLISKEN: Well, I finally tracked down a copy of the Phantasm 2013 (aka Phantasm's End) script and read it. Not a fan. It isn't bad, but it certainly isn't what I would want out of another Phantasm film and doesn't fit the series as a whole very well. Assuming this is indeed Avary's script (redrafted to include the events of Phantasm IV), I'm shocked that this is the work of a big fan of the franchise. The only returning characters would really be Reggie and The Tall Man. Mike has a few dream cameos and then just turns up as a corpse later on in the script!?!?!? Also, outside of a dead body, Jody is nowhere to be found here. We also get corpse cameos of Lisa, Alchemy, Morningside, and LeGros Mike. In terms of The Tall Man's minions, all we are given are the dwarves and ONE big scene with the spheres...................neither of which show up until the second half. The rest of the threat comes from "baggers", who are humans infected with The Tall Man's blood who become increasingly violent as the infection spreads and end up exploding.........spreading the infection to anyone in the area (think the Boomers from the Left 4 Dead games). Why these have replaced the zombies and human drones that were already present in the series is beyond me. The Gravers are nowhere in sight either. When you have multiple different types of Tall Man minions, why in the hell would you abandon most of them and replace them with something so pedestrian?
After reading for years about how awesome the script was and how it was a fitting end to the series, I'm extremely disappointed. I'm not sure what kind of budget was needed for this, but beyond showing us an apocalyptic wasteland and CGI-assisted bagger/sphere effects, there isn't much to it. The only ideas that really click for me are the whole Plague Zone, which is the quarantined off middle section of the US where the Tall Man has decimated the population and the idea of the Mormon Mausoleum. Everything else is really just a bad riff on Aliens. Actually, it almost feels like Neil Marshall rewrote this screenplay in the VASTLY superior Doomsday..........as many of the basic concepts are identical outside of the (very few) Phantasm elements. I used to be bummed out that Phantasm's End didn't get made. If this is the film we would have been given, then I'm GLAD. It's nothing but Reg and a squad of marines blowing away exploding zombies, with occasional Tall Man appearances tossed in. Would it have be fun to see Bruce Campbell as a bad*ss Nick Fury-esque marine who has the American flag tattooed across his face? Of course, but it isn't worth what we have lost because of that. The fact that he completely abandons Mike as a character is downright blasphemous towards the franchise and its true fans. Reggie's sidekick this time around? A monkey! I was fine with Tim in the third film, especially since we still had Mike doing his own thing, but did we really have to kill Mike and replace him with a d**n monkey named Titi? If this had been made, I'd rank it as one of the worst horror franchise sequels and the only misfire in this series. Almost everything iconic and/or different about this franchise is not present in the script.

THANK GOD this film never got made and I'm sure never will! I'm soooooo glad Don ended up making Oblivion instead. Having a lower budget really paid off in this case! When I was working on P4, I got a bit choked up at times during the filming, especially shooting out at Lone Pine for the outdoor scenes. It was all so beautiful and a fitting end to this wonderful series. I'm glad there's still a bit of mystery left to ponder. Not all questions need to be answered. That's one thing I always liked about the original.

Ha! What a dressing down! I have to agree with everything that he wrote. This script used to be the holy grail of Phantasm scripts. Never seen, always mentioned, always touted as a post-apocalyptic masterpiece that could have ended the series on the right note. I can't believe that Coscarelli still talks about it, upon further examination it seems like Avery could have punked Coscarelli if this hunk of crap were ever made.

I agree with Guy. I really liked the way Phantasm 4 just trails off leaving you pondering. Oblivion is honestly the ONLY movie i have ever been on the edge of my seat, LITERALLY, waiting to see what was going to happen! I also agree that collectively as Phans, we would all sacrifice body parts and sell family members to know all of the secrets of the Tall Man, BUT Guy is right that at the same time that is the magic of the series is 'not knowing'. I am also glad that Guy 'choked up' ! P4 really affected me the same way. Reggie's speech of 'get behind me..' to Mike at the end was VERY powerful and moving to me! I don't think it got the recognition it deserved, man that was just ...IT...i don't know how to put it. At the risk of seeming melodramatic, one of the high points of my life will always be actually meeting Regg and telling him how much those lines meant to me...and always will be with me.-Prymal

I hope Stephen Romano's scripts one day reach the fanbase - he has a respect and fondness for the original and it shows in his work. His sequel and remake are everything this script was not. Despite posting that link to the Avary script over a year ago, I actually just read it yesterday. Wow. Truly unbelievable. I came here to check up on the thread and am very happy to hear that everyone is in general agreement that this train wreck of a script is just unbelievably awful. I can't believe a real phan would have written the Tall Man's "jokes" that appeared in this thing. I can't believe how disrespectful it was to the series characters. I can't believe ANYONE was excited about this thing. The bottom line is that it was NOT a true PHANTASM story and we should all thank the movie gods it didn't get made. I could go on but Dustin, Bob Plisken, Natalie and everyone else pretty much covered it. Now, that said, late last year I had the wonderful privilege of reading another script for 5, an official lower-budgeted script, and if Coscarelli's intended point of chapter 5 is to wrap up the series (rather than reboot it off in a new direction with new characters) then this work did it about as well as could possibly be expected. It was written with undeniable love and immense respect for the characters and series -- and is simply pretty d**n brilliant in some of it's ideas. I believe this was the same script used for the videotaped table read, a portion of which appeared on Aint-It-Cool a while back, though I'm not certain. Regardless, IF there is actually a P5 in the works, I seriously hope this is the script being made. Now if I can only figure out how to lay my eyes on the big budget remake/reboot script that was written before New Line fumbled the ball forcing Don to pull the plug. I suspect if anyone has it, or has seen it, they are under strict orders to keep and protect all copies and secrets, so I won't press for details -- but has anyone had a chance to read it? Hey ActBreak, not sure Don is much for his script being leaked, so it's probably been removed everywhere it's been leaked. Good luck finding it.

Im going to tell you all that we have been teased about Phantasm 5 enough. Im tired of the grins when they are asked about a 5th film. Im tired of the turn off comments when the subject is brought up. I feel we are all yes all of us Phans are being laughed at by the creator of this whole thing. I feel we are all being made fools of. Sorry but that's how I feel. Thank you.
