Here are several images from a P1 deleted scene I came across not too long ago. You won't find this scene on any of the Phantasm DVDs or in Phantasm: Oblivion. It features Mike tossing around a football with a blonde-haired boy, the same one whom he and Jody passed while in the 'Cuda. If you've seen Phantasm: Oblivion, you'll know that the Tall Man eventually runs over this boy's dog.

Holy hell man, this is INCREDIBLE! My heart is so full of love for the original Phantasm that anything new from it is like the best thing ever. I wonder where this fits in within the movie? I'd guess near the beginning. Did you see the whole scene (in motion) or was it just the stills?

Very nice! Good job, Dustin! I've only seen this scene once--and it ran for about the short time it takes to view these pics. Don was showing it to me and Guy on this tiny monitor in his office... back in the days of P3. I think that's about the only remaining deleted scene we all haven't seen. Thank you for sharing, Dustin!

Quite an amazing find.
I believe there is still a ton of deleted footage around. Don said that they cut a lot of backstory from the film for time and quality reasons.

And now for the deleted final shot of the hanging tree sequence. This one was not included when the sequence was ported over into Oblivion. After being cut down, the Tall Man begins to scale the tree after Mike, who realizes what a pickle he's now in. As Tally grows closer, Mike jumps down from a high branch and the chase continues.

So in a way, it's possible all 3 fates of the Tall Man were suppose to be in the original cut. Dustin, I don't how you manage to get these scenes, but they're great! Is there anyway you can upload these deleted scenes on Youtube?

Nice. I really hope these see the light of day. If it takes buying another Phantasm DVD just to see this, I'd be down but these deleted scenes would have to be plentiful too.

I want to see the scene where Mike is at the cemetery visiting Jody's grave. The camera is supposed to pull out and show The Tall Man at a funeral across the way.
I would certainly buy another DVD if it included a lot of extras. It would be even better to get a directors cut with all of this stuff put back into the film.

I don't think that scene was ever completed because Don tried but it was possibly to difficult to film. Check out the Phantasmagoria documentary for reference.

Direct quote on what Don says on Phantasmagoria:
"We actually shot one additional ending, which a piece of it is in Phantasm I and IV, which shows Mike at the graveyard at his brothers grave. And the the camera pulls back and if you keep going back with the camera it passes a funeral in progress with Angus delivering the sermon at this funeral as Mike wanders by. Well that, while an interesting concept didn't quite work because I ambitiously tried to do it in one shot with a steady-cam type system and it has some technical flaws"
This tells me that it was filmed, even though it probably does not look the best.

This really makes me hunger for an uncut director's cut of Phantasm! That cut football scene almost reminds me of his bit part in a Starsky & Hutch episode.

I may be wrong here, but wasn't the original concept for Phantasm that it was a much longer movie about two brothers living alone after their parents' deaths, trying make their way in life and deal with their grief (Jody working in a bank, playing in the band with Reggie and Tommy, Mike hanging with friends, etc.)... and then gradually strange things start to happen around town... starting with the arrival of the Tall Man just before the halfway mark... escalating with Tommy's death and building up from there. I'm sure I heard that the Phantasm we know now is mostly culled from the second half of this larger movie, pretty much distilled down to the supernatural elements which formed only part of the original story (and were originally much more ambiguous as to whether it was really happening).

Is there anyway you can upload these deleted scenes on Youtube? Oh no, no, no, no, no. I'd be killed all kinds of dead by the Tall Man's spheres if I did that. There's still a plentiful treasure trove of unseen deleted material from Phantasm, that much I promise you. And it was all filmed. Everyone had scenes cut. Mike, Jody, Reggie, the Tall Man, the Aunt, the Fortuneteller, Sally and Suzy, Myrtle the Maid, the Lady in Lavender, the dwarves, the Dunes Cantina bartender and Don's mother. Well, almost everyone. Among the few who didn't have deleted scenes were Tommy and the Caretaker - everything they shot made it into the film.

Anyone ever noticed that the part of the hanging scene where Mike jumps down from the tree was cleverly cut into the pit sequence? Watch when Mike leaps OVER the pit. When he lands, he's not jumping over something. He's jumping down from the hanging tree. You can even see a rock (screen right) that was there when the Tall Man jumped down. I hadn't noticed this until very recently.
As it turns out, the pit sequence was shot pretty late in filming and required several re-shoots to get just right. As such, certain shots were cobbled from other scenes in the movie. Watch for when Mike turns to face the Tall Man falling into the pit, the shot they use of his head turning was from a few moments earlier when he was running through the forest.
