As many of you probably know, Don's mother wrote a novel adaptation of the original Phantasm. From what I've gathered, there is extra content in the novel that wasn't in the film.
For those (if any) of you who have read it, what are the differences? Big or small, I'm curious to know.

I'm kinda curious myself. I wish I knew how to get a copy of the novel.

that book was available from the official phantasm site. but it was a limited run so if you didn't snatch it up within say the first year it was gone.
i myself didn't get it but if it came out say 5 years ago i would have as back then i was a avid book reader.

I managed to it get a few months back. To be honest, there wasn't that much different from the film. A little bit more as to where Jody keeps buggering off to leaving Mike with his Aunt (he's a roadie btw). The story was great and Don changed very little. Rightly so I think.
If anyone'd like full details, I'll go through the novel again and let you know the exact differences and post it up

If you get a chance to read it DO SO! It gives key elements missing from the movie(although some of these are covered in the extras on the DVD). The most interesting missing element IMHO is the Aunt who was supposed to take Mike after Jody leaves because he can't stand their small town, because it weaves more into the story of Jody leaving Mike. Incidentally from what Don said in the extras on DVD the lady who was to play the Aunt...was the same lady who played the fortune-teller.

Well thats something to think now that you said the lady was susposed to play the aunt and ended up the fortune teller.
Not that her playing that role means anything but it just made me think maybe the fortune teller symbolized something to Mike.

Well what Don said in some commentaries on this subject is the lady who was going to play the fortune teller had to go to a family function and then the Lady who played the aunt(but that scene was cut) was pressed into the role as fortune teller....so it was just a matter of circumstance.

Yeah but Mike Also breaks into the Fortune Tellers house at one point and runs into her and (i posted this in another section) and we find out that her granddaughter went to Morningside to put flowers on her grandfathers grave.
Also Mikes Aunt is very odd and she keeps saying how Mike reminds or looks like her son who Died in Veitnam or something like that.

Nice....very good points...which I had forgotten...guess it's time to re-read it.

I was just having a quick flip through the book to see if there's any mention of the greek gods above the door for the other thread, but I noticed one thing about the book is that it say's that Mike's parents owned a bank and they were loaded, so that's where all the money comes from.
Nothing about the greek heads though, just that they are 'menacing'

There is also details about Tommy in the book. It states that he had barracaded him in his fathers basement, wedged a hunting knife between two boards and threw himself upon it. His father had to break in threw a basement window to get to him. Clever Tall Man...
Mike's cousin died in the Korean war, for some clarification.

Oddly enough I just rememberd something else.
Morningside wasnt always called Morningside.
Jody gets talking to the Bartender and he says that the place was sold to "Someone" after the owners before had some odd things happen to thier "Stiff"
I'd go into detail about what happend to the body but its a little Graphic. not gory either. but if I remember right some guy lost his "goods" and they were placed elsehwere.
(I think this happend. but if it didnt I have no idea where else I read it at)

Ah yes, I do recall that from the book. Apparently the old undertaker went nuts and replaced someone's junk, lol. I always assumed that there weren't new owners, but rather the Tall Man had let himself in...
