I've watched Phantasm forever--it seems like it. Anyway, Phantasm IV completely confused me. I'm looking for insight into this movie. 1) what infection is Jody talking about? 2) Was Mike really dead--a clone or something??? I saw Yellow on his temple when he was cut with the blade from the silver ball. To me, that means he wasn't really human. 3) I didn't learn a thing about the tall man's past. I thought we'd see something that would tell why he turned so evil. Did I miss this? 4)Could Mike really be the tall man as a youngster? This seemed to be hinted at before. ? Somehow it seems he's linked to the tall man but we are never told in what way. 5)What knowledge was supposed to be in Mike's head--in the silver ball? Why did the tall man need that silver ball? 6) at the end of the movie, a young Mike is with Regie in a car. Is that Mike now a clone like Mike--not really human? He did hear his older self mention he was dying, yet he denied he heard anything when Regie asked young Mike if he heard anything. Anything else you'd like to help me with? I'm preparing to watch all 4 once again this weekend.

All I can really say is... welcome to the wonderfully confusing world of Phantasm.

1. The infection was the H1N1 virus. 2. Actually, Mike was dead. The Tall Man just used his super duper powers to control Mike's body like he does with the spheres. 3. Jebediah was teased a lot when he was young due to his height and that he was a nerd. He swore revenge againt everyone and that is how he turned evil. 4. Mike is actually the Tall Man's son. It's sort of a love-hate relationship similar to Darth Vader and Luke. 5. 42. 6. Pi. I'm just teasing you. Welcome to the forum.

If you're still around, here are some... attempts at serious answers XD 1) It was most likely the disease deleted from the original script which caused humans to explode into the yellow goo that filled the tall man... or something. I don't quite remember the details 2) I think Mike's turning into the same thing that the tall man is. 3) Tall man is really an alien with... alien motives . The guy from the flashbacks had his form taken. 4) Who knows? It could be considering all the time manipulation throughout the series 5) That's just a mystery in itself 6) Good question, and good theory at that! I just figured it was either a flashback or indication that Reggie or Mike had gone back to try and correct things

I just tracked down and watched the 4th film on DVD recently and was not all together impressed. It seem very, very, very confusing and downright dull at times.
1. At the the end of the 3rd film, we seem to get the distinct impression that Mike has one of those sphere inside his head, much like his brother who apparently comes back from the dead. Yet, the 4th film never really cleared this up for me.
2. The two new characters introduced in the 3rd film -- whom I very much liked -- are forgotten in the 4th film.

I just watched this part for the first time and i was impressed. I didn't like the third one very much, i thought that Tim and Rocky were not so good picks for main characters. But here, we have the main four characters doing their job nicely, and Heidi Marnhout plays his role surprisingly well too. His character was much better than Rocky i think. Of course Phantasm IV causes some confusion as we can see, but it's slowly moving plot gives some time to think about the possible plot holes which aren't revealed. This is the most fascinating part of Phantasm for me, that you can think with your own head and the plot isn't too easy for the viewer. I especially loved the astounding filming locations that helped to create a great atmosphere. The more mature way of directing that mr. Doscarelli does here is also a great addition to the series. I don't think that Phantasm IV beats the first part or the second part, but this is very, very close up there with those two Phantasm classics. We need the fifth part NOW!

i loved this movie...the use of deleated scenes from the first to counter act the very low budget was just inspiring. the only thing in this film that seemd to be the most "confusing" (i "" beacuse all the movies are deliberate to own interpritation) was the old fortune teller returnig, dont get me wrong i thought it was a great nod but what is her true significances. also was i the only one a little creeped out when the tall man was nice (as jebadiah i meen)

The Tall Man takes the Sphere out of Mikes Head leaving Mike to die. Thats why Reggie went back in time to be with Young Mike. My guess is so he can change Mikes out-come in the future. And I agree. Loved Tim & Rocky and nothing said about them in Part 4. Of course Rocky high tailed it out of there at the end of 3, and we saw something Grab Tim, but they never referenced if he died or what.

I have posted this before, i take Phantasm 1-4 as a whole. I think if i didn't like even one of them, it would destroy it all for me. I do think it is cool when people may not like something that has sequels but still give at least part of them a chance. Take Indiana Jones 4, i know it wasn't all impressive, but it was cool seeing Ford take up the mantle again. If you didn't dig it, turn off the dvd set at 3.

All I can say is this: Today, I saw all four Phantasm movies for the very first time. I will admit to skipping through 3, looking for key points - it just didn't grab me.
Bottom line for me? The fourth film attempts to be a final film, yet purposefully leaves itself open. Don had every reason to believe he could get another film made, but was cautious with his writing, because of a little voice call realism.
With all the talk of P5 on the horizon, I hope that all is laid out, but not dumbed down.
Hell, I'd be happy with a 90 explanation of P4. Seriously.

I believe the original script was going to reveal that Mike was the alien and he started it all. Don just decided he wasn't going to go that route. The reveal was going to be during the civil war scene. Jeb Morningside is doing the autopsy on Mike, or possibly an ancestor of Mike. When he cuts into him, the yellow blood would have squirted out and it would get on Jeb and infect him turning him eventually into the Tall man. This would have had it that Mike or ancestor Mike was the alien that started it all. But Don didn't do that, but the other scene still had Mike with yellow blood. So whether Mike is still an alien or the Tall Man is just turning him into something is not yet known.
