No way, Man!! That was an evil switch up in Oblivion (good for story, but i am loyal to Jody, he is good!) and i was waiting for him to turn back good, or see a return of the good Jody in part 5. I think when he told Mike he had died, he was saying that out of frustration of the Tall Man controlling him. Jody really felt like he had died and was at the Tall Man's control. I think if we could "see" past Oblivion, Jody would return to Mike. His essence has to be intact, or he would never have even told Mike he had died in the car wreck!

He sure didn't die in the Cuda thats for sure as it appears in Phantasm 2. I'm assuming thats supposedly the same Cuda.

Does anyone out there with some inside tips know if Don meant to bring Jody back in the beginning? Or was this one of those things that just happened along the way?

It's impossible to say. I think, for the purpose of THE STORY, it would be important to keep Jody around in some way, shape, or form (if there were future movies) because so much of Mike's struggle is caught up in his relationship with Jody.
One of my favorite parts of IV is when Mike comments that he could never really trust Jody, but Reg was always there for him. When I heard Mike say that...I felt relieved for the movie, because I knew it wasn't going to be another shoot-'em-up (like part II). We got a hearkening back to the really effective emotional core of the first film -- Mike insecure about whether Jody will stay with him or abandon him.

I don't think he died in a car wreck. I remember watching a scene where Jody returns to a house and goes through a closet, to when he closes it, the Tall Man is seen staring at him through the mirror. I cannot remember if it was the first film, a deleted scene from the first, or a flashback in Oblivion. I think they that Reg and Mike lied to themselves for so long that they actually believed he died in a car wreck. However, Jody did say in Oblivion that he did die in a car wreck. But I think that he wanted to make his brother feel at ease just before he died.

I just had a new thought on this one.
Don's commentary on P4 suggests that he wasn't sure if P4 was going to be the last Phantasm film or not. Given the possibility that it might be, he wanted each character to have "go out" in a way that was appropriate....in a way that sort of epitomized the character.
(For example, Reggie runs through the portal, still eager to fight; the Tall Man walks through a portal triumphant with the new sphere).
Based on this, I think we can take Jody's statement that he died in a car wreck to be Don's intended last word on the matter. Don was aware P4 might be the last one and that's the answer he gave.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Oh, you know that might be possible! Remember the scene where Mike stabs Jody in the graveyard and then Jody grabs Mike just a moment later while Jody's original body lay in the background...maybe "good" Jody will reappear from another dimension or time portal to rejoin Regg and Mike in whatever place they went into at the end of Oblivion!

I hate to be Mr GloomyGuts, but I think that's really the end of the Jody charachter. I don't see where else they could take his story. They've pretty much killed him off and I don't think Bill would want back in.
As for him dying, I think he really did die in a car wreck and Tally just got to his body before they could save him

I would imagine in the real world you are correct on this Steve (the real world always sucks) I am relying on the Jody's words themselves "We can never trust what we see".... I'm just a diehard on this "Phamily" thing...
