To be honest there are no sequels its a continuation of the same film, you cannot actually watch the films as a seperate entity in my mind You are correct in saying that it is a continuation of the same film. Coscarelli has said that it was the most logical thing to do, start the next one right where the last one ended. However, most of us saw one of the sequels first and then went on to watch the original and it's subsequent entries.

icecreamman: "There was virtually nothing wrong with this sequel. All the original characters were back. All the original cast returned. It took the storyline to a whole-new level.
It was great. Phantasm II would have been the best if Mike Baldwin had returned instead of James Legros."
1.)Nothing wrong with this sequel? Not only is the movie flawed as hell but it ditches plotlines characters in favor of all-to-sudden new ones
2.) Yeah all the original characters were back but the magic was not; the first Phantasm was cool, I personally thought, because of the innocence. Normal town, three friends, and a supernatural mystery uncovered. Phantasm III had none of that and Jody I personally felt was way out of place the way his character was presented.
3.)Phantasm had more than four castmembers; Baldwin returned and Thornbury was written back in: thats it. What of the fortune teller & her daughter? What of a(n actual role) for Kat Lester? Plus most of the plot was established in Phantasm II; no one from that returned.
4.) What did it do to the storyline? The Tall man decides he wants to capture Mike instead of kill him and I can gaurantee Don Coscarelli had no idea what the sphere in the head would lead in to. Other than that it was basicly a sillier take on Phantasm II.
(5.)) I personally feel Phantasm II is the best sequel, not because it was flashy, but because it was dark and was totally different from the first and yet not only stood very true to it, but took it to new heights. James LeGros really surprised me and did not bother me at all; he really is an excellent actor and was way better than Baldwin in my opinion, in Phantasm 3 at least, which Baldwin pretty much bombed. Granted he was excellent in the first and very good in Phantasm IV but he just kinda bugged me in the third.

I liked Phantasm IV-Oblivion because it showed Jebediah Morningside as the embalmer and amiable owner of Morningside Mortuary in the 1860's before he became the Tall Man and started chasing Mike all over the place and saying "Boooyyyyyyy". This explained where the 1800's tin type of Jebediah on the horse drawn funeral wagon in which he came to life and looked at Mike, came from in Phantasm I. I thought this was the coolest flash back connection from P-IV to P-I.

P2 was good but Oblivion holds a very special place in my heart. Welcome to the boards, by the way, IceCreamMan! I agree. Oblivion gets a bad rap for the obviously low budget, but I thought it did a great job being minimal without seeming cheap. It brought the series back to the spirit of the first Phantasm. Personally, I rate them in this order: 1, 4, 2, 3
