Compare the scene in Part I at the fortune teller's with the hand in the box, with this scene from Dune:
Now, this movie came out several years after Phantasm I. But this scene is in Frank Herbert's book which I believe was published much earlier than the first Phantasm film.

The bar in Phantasm is named Dune so I am pretty sure Don is a huge fan.

Oh, that's right. The Dunes Cantina. I always thought that was some kind of reference to dune buggies or something. What area of the U.S. was Morningside anyway?

I forget where the movie is set exactly but I think the actual mausoleum is in long beach.

I love Dune myself, the movie - I'm going to read it soon.
Can't stop coming back to the b-movie Dune, it is so beautiful and every quote is epic and sticks to you.
It is a very beautiful movie... but you're talking about the book that came before Phantasm I, right?
The parallel is clear as crystal, to me. It' too familiar not to be.

I have heard from several people that indeed Don is a fan of Dune, it wouldn't surprise me at all seeing what his imagination has brought forth for us to enjoy in film.
