As many of you know, the Phan 5 budget decreased after Phan 2. My information is that, its generally known that the budget for Phan 4 was 800K, and I still think that is a very underrated movie which must be watched multiple times to get where it is coming from.
The budget for 5 was about half of 4. which leads me to say...that they did one heck of a job putting on the screen so much for so little. You cannot judge this movie based upon inflated budgets of the past and thats to say with infllation also a factor.
A lot of people worked for free, and the actors gave it all, especially reggie, Mike and Angus.
They pulled off a miracle without big studio telling them to make it PG- for a bigger market or $.
I request every board member to give this installment a chance, like 4 my prediction over time and MULTIPLE viewings this will grow you.
On the criticism that it did not conclude the story....that is IS NOT the what Phantasim is all about....it NEVER ends...and the multiple universe theory fits perfect with that.......closing the door on one reality does not mean others still are out there to be opened.
The well go box set which is up on youtube...the opening it is looks fantastic. I think if you take one film at time over say 5 days..you will see how it all fits together....Enjoy it, I know I will

As an admitted "phan boy", I love Ravager and STILL find myself popping it in the bluray player, watching it regularly. You're right, Ravager seems to get ripped on a lot for it's low budget and effects. It actually begins to look amazing what they pulled off when you compare it to say, a Syfy channel production like Sharknado, which had a considerably larger budget ($2 million) than Ravager, yet looked infinitely worse. Keep in mind Ravager was made with no studio help, either. As much as Ravager gets ripped on, one thing that CAN'T be said is that they did it to cash in. It's apparent they did put heart into this.
As for Oblivion, as much as I loved it, my main gripe (more of a nitpick maybe) is that desert setting was incredibly boring. Part of the charm of the Phantasm series for me is the creepy interior locations (mausoleums!) and Oblivion was lacking in that. Despite that however, I still find myself re-watching Oblivion regularly too.
That Well Go box set looks pretty enticing, doesn't it? It's awesome they included the original box art for each release.

While I still put Ravager as my least favorite film in the series, to some degree I have come to terms with it. I think I posted something about this around the time it was released on its own...once I listened to the commentary and had more insight into what they were trying to do with no money and confused and trying schedules and all that, I became slightly more forgiving of the film. I never like post-apocalyptic settings, I wish there had been more definite closure and some more explanation of who/what the Tall Man really is, and I don't care for the shift to Reggie being the main guy over Mike, but it's not like viewing Ravager ruined my life or anything like some people make it out to be.

To each his own. I would've just preferred that it was not made. I think Don and company set a standard with the first 4 films and had all kinds of time (nearly 2 years) after Ravager was finished filming to know that it was a far cry from the first 4 films (and not worthy of cinematic release/treatment). More worthy of what is was "a webisode." I haven't bought the bluray, or listened to the commentary, but budget/scheduling aside, it just seems like they did things in this film that showed lack of continuity, and creativity (on a small budget). Phantasm I took a long time to film and had a small budget, but it was one of the best storylines of the franchise and feels like a big film (for 1979). My other (probably least mentioned complaint), Ravager showed a change of tone (also) from prior 4 films. The jokes were black-comedy like and distasteful (i.e. the car thief underwear scene, role of Chunk, Rocky re-appearing for 5 minutes just to be treated like a hooker, the horse unnecessarily attacked/killed by the sphere, Chunk constantly calling Reggie "Baldie"). These things didn't feel Don Coscarelli-like. Prior to the film's release, I was excited they were giving new blood,(Hartman) a fan of the series a chance to direct, however, I now wish that Don would have been in control of the entire final project (budget-aside). I think the humor in Ravager (possibly Hartman's) poorly aligns with humor from the previous films. It was a turn-off (aside from the other flaws) that made the film hard to re-watch. Maybe the commentary sheds more insight on who came up with some of the styled-humor of Ravager, but it just didn't seem Don Coscarelli-like. Just my two-cents...

Yeah well, it goes both ways and you can't please everyone. Had Ravager been anything like the previous 4, you'd have people bitching about how it's regurgitated stuff. I do get a chuckle out of how people get so triggered over this movie, they resort to saying childish things like "I don't consider it cannon!" Ok, fine, STFU and don't watch it. It looks nice on my shelf next to remastered and Scream Factory's Phantasm 2 release and I'm glad it had a different tone. As much as I liked Oblivion, there's nothing creepy about the desert (especially during the daytime) in my opinion.
People have a right to their opinions. It's inevitable that yes, people will dislike this movie, but it gets obnoxious when people claim they know what's cannon over the creator. I'm glad they killed the IMDB boards with fire for this very reason.

We have a right to express our views just as much as you have a right to express your love affair with Ravager. And yes, i don't consider it canon. And yes, part 5 Ravaged the other 4 into oblivion... The End.

If you don't consider it canon, your argument isn't with me, it's with Don so take it up with him.
