I know it's a sphere and some sortof Tall Man-killing bomb, but what I don't understand is how could he create such complex things out of a simple engine and what purpose did the sphere serve? It seemed to have no function that related to the bomb and didn't harm the Tall Man either.
And on the subject of that, am I the only one that feels the Tall Man's "deaths" are kindof pointless if he's going to come back only seconds later? It seems like Mike and Reggie would have realized by then that if they manage to destroy the Tall Man's body, he'll either have a gold sphere fly out of it or another clone will show up.

I think the significance of the "car-sphere" (or "carb-sphere") in Oblivion was to show that Mike had really embraced his status as a Tall being. I mean, by this point he's sensitive to cold, able to summon space-gates, has yellow blood, able to move objects with his mind and able to make a sphere, however simplistic, and command it (or move it) to attack someone. Spheres seem to be a natural, mechanical and yet organic extension of a Tall being.
The greater thing going on here is that while Mike is embracing his fate as a Tall being more and more, he's using these newfound abilities to fight back against the Tall Man rather than fight alongside the Tall Man.
As for why do they keep trying to kill the Tall Man... well.... if they didn't try to kill him, they'd be giving in to him. And you can't have that. And since he'll always go after Mike, there are few options left to them aside from killing him.
And HellBound, let me say that it's a pleasure having you here. In your first few posts, you've brought some very intelligent discussion to the board.

I suppose that could be it.. but I feel like I'm missing something.. like there's some significance to the contraption Mike created.. it's properties and the purpose of the sphere in relation to it. Could it be that the Tall Man's hearses aren't like your everyday hearse and contain his technology? Oh, and speaking of Mike embracing his fate, why didn't the tuning fork affect him when he used it on Jody and TM? He seems to be the same as them. A sphere inside a human looking body filled with yellow blood. Well I don't expect them to give in, but come up with alternate ways of fighting him. The act of destroying his body has become futile, and it seems to me that the key to stopping him lies in the dimensional gates. Ah, thanks. I try my best, it's hard summing up my thoughts on a message board sometimes. I feel like I'm rambling without any organization. lol

That's a good question. You know... there are several possible explanations. One is that Mike hadn't yet completed his transformation and was still wearing the flesh suit he was born with whereas the Tall Man has been cruising around in synthetic bodies for quite some time now. Another thought is that the Tall Man is 100% alien and only appears human. He's not Jebediah Morningside turned evil. He's the Tall Man. Mike, however, retains his humanity as he's being converted from human to Tall being. In this respect, they can never be exactly alike and you can accoun for differences such as the tuning fork this way.
Well, I'll ask you to keep in mind that just before the fiery climax of Oblivion, they were trying to do just that. Mike was trying to kill Jebediah Morningside so that the Tall Man would never exist. But that plan didn't work out so back in the present, he and Reggie needed to buy more time. When the Tall Man is near, you either kill him or be killed/captured yourself. I don't think that Mike really thought he was killing the Tall Man for good with that hearse explosion. It was simply buying them an escape from Death Valley.
Mighty good questions, Hellbound!

I agree with the assessment about killing him temporarily to buy some time, but they actually seemed surprised when he came out of the gates again.

I've often wondered the same thing, that once P3 was over and into P4, our heroes would be going after The Tall Man in a different manner. They have... Imprisoned his apparition (and he escaped)Killed his apparition (only to have it replaced)Frozen his apparition (only to have the gold sphere emerge)Tried the "retroactive abortion" (and failed)Jody told Mike that what came back was NOT Jebediah. They might not be able to stop/kill Jebediah (that's where you start messing with the time-continuum...and I'm not privy to Don's thoughts on opening up that can of worms)However, what our heroes can do is change their tactics. If Mike is finished as a human, then he is a sphere, and I would reckon a far more powerful one than Jody. Mike and Reggie could be on stronger footing than they were before, and possibly take the fight to The Tall Man on HIS turf (whatever planet/dimension it may be). Just a thought
