Do you think Phantasm III would have done well theatrically? From what I understand, Phantasm II was a bit of a financial letdown. But maybe with the entire original cast, good promotion/distribution, etc... it might have had a fighting chance to do decently (for a horror film anyway).
What do you think?

Too weird/off-the-wall. It may have done well had it come out in the 80s, but by the 90s horror-comedy was starting to become depreciated.

Phantasm II from what I understand wasn't promoted all that well and was released in the summer...which resultedin a not even $9 million profit. Also the late 80's were a bad time for horror; people seemed to be sick of it regardless of genera. Could be wrong but I dunno. Universal later did the same with the Tales from the Crypt film Bordello of Blood, because everyone wants to see bad horror-comedys with Corey Feldmen that already have a small audiance in the middle of the summer. Profit was about the same, and as a result the 3rd film was scrapped; being a fan and knowing that the 3rd flick would have been amazing it's kinda heartbreaking.
Phantasm III's small screenings apparently did much better than expected, but Phantasm is so little known that I don't know if people would have either totally ignored it or went "Hey, what the f**k is this? Lets check it out!"; more than likely both. But regardless of profit it disen't really feel like a mainstream-friendly flick like the first two; kinda felt like an uneven theatricle DTV, which makes no sense. It might have done ok, but I'm guessing $7-$15 million tops had it gone theatrical.

Honesty? I don't think it would of done very well seeing that the sequel didn't turn in that much of a profit for the late 1980's as the poster above me all ready stated. I'm sure if more $$$ was spent for promotion (posters, trailers, ads, TV spots, the cast appearing at conventions) the hype for horror fans would be pretty good but no...I don't think it would of done well even though the original is a classic. I think they were smart making it direct to video. Maybe they could of at least made it air on TV as an event or something...

I don't think it would've done well even if it had a wide release. I know a lot of phans would turn out for it but from the sounds of things, not many people are into Phantasm III. It might've turned in a decent profit at most but for the most part it probably wouldn't have brought in too many people other than fans due to its oddness. In my opinion, at least.
If I would've been of age to see it back then, I probably would've checked it out at least once or twice.
