Does anyone else love the alternate death of The Tall Man in P1? I prefer it to the rock scene(sorry!).
If Don would have kept this scene in the film, the sequels would have been a tad different. Mostly in P3. Instead of Mike having a flashback, it would have been solid knowledge. And since he would have known that you can put The Tall Man out of work for a while with it, he would have also known that it is rather futile.
Any thoughts on how else this would have changed the series?

I found it more funny than climatic, just the way it happened, but yeah, I did like it ;D
Outside the films it would have prevented fans such as myself bitching about the logic to it regarding wether The Tall Man was embracing the cold or pained by it; taking this ending out makes the street scene pretty much pointless so I had always seen it as a cold being embracing the cold sort of thing. Plus most of the extra footage shot for Phantasm were alternatives (scenes, endings, etc.) so I mostly saw it that way. Phantasm III introduced it because i think Don needed to find a way to defeat The Tall Man, or at least immobilize the body so the sphere could get out, and went back to that from the first film. It's a neverending arguement though, for either side of the matter.
Inside the films, I think Phantasm II would have been affected the most, because TTM's death scene was great and surprising, and having seen him really die in the first film would have deffinately take effect of the ending. Phantasm III would have probobly just neglected the flashback, but both movies I'm guessing would involve a cold-themed arsenel from Mike/Reggie but alternative defeats for the Tall Man because killing him three times the same way with no long term results is kinda pointless after three entire films. Oblivion never addressed the cold thing but established a new weakness so if at all I'm not sure how it would be affected, though I doubt it would be much.

And I pretty much agree with you about how it would affect the series. They'd know to turn to it with previous encounters of The Tall Man, perhaps even in Phantasm II. I'm in the process of rewatching the series so some of my thoughts my be wrong due to me being a bit rusty!

Though I like it from a curiosity stand point, I think the mind shaft demise complements the dream like continuity of the film. Especially since it segues into Mike being consoled by the fireplace. Plus, being a looney tunes fan, it reminded me of how Wile E. Coyote would sometimes perish. Substitute the Tall Man for Wile E. down below and see what I mean. Just think if Phantasm ended this way.

Only problem i had with the mineshaft was that the rocks filled up too quickly. Another thing i wouldve put in would be an echo of the tall man screaming as he fell 1000 ft. Ther wasnt enough of that in the scene.
