You know, I was watching Oblivion last night on Netflix on my Xbox, and I noticed something weird. When Reg is attacked by the two spheres and one snags his hand, he takes the tuning fork out and the sphere explodes as he hit the fork on the dresser. When Mike is lying on the table with Jody holding him down and the Tall Man attempts to operate on him, Mike grabs the tuning fork and bangs it on the table, which causes the Tall Man to freeze. Since the sphere in his head reacted to the frequency of the fork causing him to freeze, why wasn't the sphere in Mike's head affected? What are you thoughts?

Natalie - what a brilliant observation! I've never before considered this, though it's a fascinating topic. In P4, Mike is undergoing a transformation into a Tall being... perhaps he's not yet transformed enough to be affected by the vibrations? Seeing how the Tall Man plucked his sphere mere moments later, something tells me that Mike was pretty darn close to completing the transformation.
So instead, maybe Mike's original flesh construct provides some sort of special protection from the vibrations - more protection than the alien suits the Tall Man and Jody wear. Then again - does it matter any that Mike is the one HOLDING the fork? Does that factor into this at all?

When the Tall Man sat in the back of the hearse and talked to Mike, he told him about preparing for passage. He could have been fully transformed and didn’t know it. For all we know, he could be completely alien. He has shown every trait the Tall Man has except for one thing – he being able to come back into another form. But his original form has yet to die. At the end of P4, he was still alive.
But if Mike’s construct in near complete transformation as you said, then he should be dominate with alien construct. The sphere that was attached to Reg’s hand exploded. It had no protection. However, the sphere in the Tall Man’s head was protected by the alien construct. It just simply froze. So if Mike’s construct was almost alien, then he should have froze as well.
This brings me another idea that can prove the above paragraph incorrect. His “passage” as the Tall Man discusses with him could be the sphere in his head going into his alien form. Thus the Tall Man removing it from his head. He needed to remove it to put into his completed alien cast. So all along, that could be his original flesh construct and that was why the Tall Man kept trying to remove the sphere. He tried to take it out multiple times professionally; however towards the end he simply pulled it out right there, probably because he was sick of the way they were playing the game. This could possibly be his passage, and so the next time we see Mike, he’ll maybe be fully transformed, new partner of the Tall Man or replacement, in his own alien body.
You make a good point there. Vibrations can travel through matter. And some matter act as a insulator and can absorb much of the vibrations. So it can be possible that his flesh construct provides special protection against the vibrations. But perhaps it’s not the vibrations that affect them. It could be the frequency at which the tuning fork hits. Similar to how a certain frequency of sound can shatter a glass.

Natalie, I love how you think! Very astute! Really stopped me in my tracks and changed my thinking about P4 and Mike's metamorphis! I'm with both you and Dustin on the theory that until Mike's sphere/soul leaves his human body ("imperfect flesh") it is still immune to the (purer?) frequencies of the Tall Man's realm--and thus better able to tolerate the frequencies of our lower/Earthly realm. Mike's body is far less sensitive to a tuning fork hum--or, as you said, better shielded/insulated. Makes me start thinking of ant hives, and how there is probably a communal buzz/hum that keeps them all in communication? They're able to hear/sense this vibration, whereas we humans cannot. And perhaps they're more sensitive to other sounds/vibrations that people just take for granted.

There are very low frequency sounds which the ear cannot hear, but which have a direct influence on the body, messing with the inner ear and such. This is what most people disproveing 'supernatural' phenomenon say causes the unexplainable eerie feeling we get in haunted houses. So an extension of this and Mike's body not being susceptable to it does make sense. Good spot and good theory, I'd not thought of it either.

We might also be over-thinking it. It could just possibly be a minor error in the screenplay.

Heres a thought, since the brain is inside the sphere (think P3) wouldnt removing the sphere from mikes head also remove his brain thus rendering him brain dead? ah, the never dead lives again...

Maybe the sphere was not turned on yet and the tall man needed it being it did not seem to have gonna work out with Mike. Mike has fighted him all along and i really would be dissapointed it Mike turned into a tall man. Tallman took it and went back thru the dimension fork. Reggie, upset about dying Mike ran after Tallman to try to save Mike.

Wow! I never noticed that. Great observations. I don't know how he isn't immobilized too. There must be some reason why though.
