I saw this lat night and thought it was fairly decent. The story is a quite run-of-the-mill exorcism tale, but part of the most interesting bit was the start of the film… The opening scene of the film starts in a mortuary, with the first object you really see is the pumping machine full of yellow formaldehyde. The scene plays out with the main character (a mortician) preparing a body for burial. Got a few squeamish noises from the audience I can tell you. That really sent shivers down my spine, mainly excitement. I won’t go on too much, but the main character decides to leave the family business and join the priesthood, gets sent to Rome to learn the exorcism rites and becomes entangled in a possession.
I always enjoy seeing Anthony Hopkins at work, I think he’s one of the best actors ever and Rutger Hauer’s small but moving performance is worth seeing for fans of his. If you haven’t seen it, I can really recommend this one, if not only for the opening scene (Ms. Deem, hint hint).

Dear Scubasteve, Thank you for the recommendation! lollol I saw "The Rite" (as a big Hopkins fan, had to see) the weekend it came out. The embalming sequences were SPOT ON. They were very accurate--except for the color of the embalming fluid (it's usually orange, pink or red) and the stuff up the nose (plain cotton webril is the norm, not whatever that stuff was they used onscreen). What made me squeamish was simply Rutger's lingering attention to the lady's nails--until later when we realized she was his wife. And that got me a little choked up because I've had to embalm a close friend and to cremate my grandfather. I really thought Rutger did a wonderful job in the film. The most powerful scene for me was his phonecall to his son. Thank you again. It's always fun to see folks recommending new things out there.

It was very moving, I think the best scene next to when Hopkins goes bonkers for the first time and slips into his Welsh accent. He's just amazing. Funny thing with the Welsh accent is that mostly it is so benevolent and I love the Welsh people to bits, mainly for this reason. So hearing it almost demonic was terrifying.
The clack of the teeth closing shut whilst being seweed up also creeped me out a little. I don't like the sound of things like bones breaking. It's a fingernails on chalkboard scenario for me. Only much more hideous. The colour of the formaldehyde may have been inspired by our beloved film, it would be interesting to find out why it was done that way.
I have to say I admire you for the jobs you've done, it's not an average job that anyone can do. I certainly don't think I could.

I have not seen the rite, yet. Has anyone seen Hopkins years back in movie called instinct? Man, the scene where he goes berserk on a fellow inmate is intense! This is not a horror movie, but i like it.

The name rings a bell, but I've not seen it. For me the best he's done was The Elephant Man followed by Silence of the Lambs. I got a film a few weeks back called Audrey Rose, where Hopkins plays the role of a stalker of a young girl of a couple and he believes that the child is a reincarnation of his dead daughter. Not had the chance to watch it yet, but sounds insane

Peaked my interest (Hopkins doing a possession movie). Did not have much of a run here locally, it was out of theatres in less than 2 weeks.
Rutger Hauer is a favorite and especially Anthony Hopkins. Audrey Rose , now that's dusting off the memory banks. Don't remember it however. Audrey Rose, Phantasm, Burnt Offerings all around the same time, I believe.
side note: good one to rent ~ [Knight and Day (Cruise/Diaz)]

I also liked Hopkins in the new version of The Wolf Man. Has anyone seen this, and what did you guys think?

Prymal, I'm curious to see "The Wolfman" myself after watching Rick Baker win an Oscar for it! I found myself grinning ear to ear, thinking how proud Forry Ackerman would have been to see that.

I really enjoyed Wolfman, the most frightening bit was seeing how much Del Toro had put on in the past few years. Not that I can talk Hugo Weaving also had a good performance as Inspector Abeline (same as Johnny Depp in From Hell). Very much worth seeing. Also, Hugo Weaving as the Tall Man? I bet he could muster a good "Booooy!"

Hugo Weaving is the man! I honestly could not think of him as a good guy after his bit in the Matrix UNTIL i watched Lord of The Rings trilogy! Man he rocks as a good guy too. Not a lot of actors (in my opinion) can bounce around between bad guy, then a good guy. Of course, one of my most pleasant surprises of my life was meeting Angus Scrimm! Wow, what a class act! A gentleman's gentleman / scariest m*th*rf**k*r on the planet, lol. I believe Angus stands alone in his own class. Truly one of the last class acts from a bygone era.

You're right - Angus does stand alone in his own class, but even classic horror icons like as Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff had performers assume their most famous roles after them. I wouldn't mind seeing another performer play the Tall Man one day, but not anytime soon.
Hugo Weaving might be interesting in the role. Certainly, he's a great actor, but anyone who did try to do the Tall Man after Angus Scrimm would need to make it their own and branch out. Imitating Angus, I imagine, would not work out well for anyone.

I told my brother one time that an actor that i thought had a "creepy Tall Man-esque " quality about him was David Carradine of Kung Fu fame. I really like him and a lot of the roles he took on. Another guy that has the same "Tall Man" quality about him is David Warner. I loved him in Wax Work (he has had many great roles)! I actually wish they would do a 3rd Wax Work and bring his character back. I watched a documentary on Nightmare on Elm St. and i had never realized David W. was the original Freddy before dropping out of the role.

That's interesting, I never knew that. David Carradine is in one of my favourite movies of all time - Death Race 2000. What a movie. If anyone hasn't seen that I really recommend it. It was a pity that the remake wasn't a bit more than it was. That could have been a real stunner, rather than a Jason Statham movie with a straight to video sequel.

I loved Carradine in Kung Fu, and then again in the sequel show Kung Fu the Legend Continues. Of course Kill Bill 1 & 2 was awesome. If you are a fan, Circle of Iron is an old movie of his that i thought was great. The role was written for Bruce Lee, but Carradine wound up with the role. As a matter of fact, Bruce Lee helped co-write Kung Fu, but the role was given to Carradine because hollywood thought America wasn't ready for an Oriental actor on tv, the same reason Lee wore the mask in the Green Hornet. These are pretty old facts so sorry to bore those who knew these already, LOL !

Just watched this and thought it was good.
I think it's pretty near impossible to pull off an original exorcist movie. Sort of like an original zombie movie. That aside I thought the dream sequences were the scariest.

Agreed. Rutger was amazing in it--understated, touching, poignant, and--as always--a bit creepy. The scene that creeped me out the most was... the... phone... call...
