I've been going through a box of old albums and articles and found this... Thirty years ago, in December 1981, this special aired on television. It was to commemorate the upcoming Epcot Center in Florida. Angus had mentioned to me over lunch in July 1981 (my first meeting with the Tall Man...) that he would be playing Walt Disney's father, Elias. I got such a kick out of the idea of Walt Disney being overshadowed by the Tall Man (!). lollol Anyway, back in those days there was no way to record this stuff for most folks like me. And once something aired, especially TV specials like this, there was a 99% you'd never see 'em again. So I did what little I could to capture the moment. I donned my still camera, setting on 1/60th of a second (the only way to fully capture an image on a TV screen), and snapped away. Strange to think that at the tender age of 16 I was trying to be an Archivist myself. I remember my mom and I watching the TV, smiling together. There was something really charming about seeing someone on TV whom we'd be sitting with and laughing only months before. Angus had only three quick scenes as I recall. There was a saccharine song about Marceline, MO, Walt's hometown, sung over all of this. It would be fun to see this footage again if possible. Attachments:

Here is the next scene with Elias catching young Walt. It had a Tall Man-grabbing-Mike quality to it. Attachments:

Last scene, the entire Disney family on the train. Angus, looking dapper in a turn of the century outfit, sits at far right. Attachments:

One wonders why the TV reception was so poor, right? Bet there was a NJ snowstorm blowing outside at the time. lollol Sorry for the grainy shots. Finally, here is the clipping from TV Guide about the special. Back then, I was a fanatic about keeping this kind of stuff. I was thrilled to see Angus in just about anything. Attachments:

That is really cool vintage stuff Kristen. Love the TV Guide clipping. I had the Northern NJ version. OMG…the performers…Marie Osmond, Mac Davis, Mikhail Baryshnikov…lol…I wonder if I watched that show back then and not knowing it was the Tall Man. It would be great to see this footage. You were definitely ahead of your time. I used a cassette recorder to tape shows from TV. I still have that same recorder and it still works.

I remember those "Close Up" features. Quite dedicated.

You know, i just gotta jump in here with a comment: Just as the line between the Tall Man and Mike blurs, that same line gets blurred between Phans and the Philms, lol. I am just wondering...does Phantasm drive us....or do we drive Phantasm?? Great memories and great job for Dustin recapturing them!

That is so cool.. I went to Epcot in 81! The good old days.. there were no blogs or forums like this.. we only had a two line sentence we could mail in for the classified ads in the back of Fangoria.

Good old Fangoria! That's how I befriended Guy Thorpe, Justin Z. and other Phantasm fans.
