I graduated from the Dallas Institute of Funeral Service. I am a funeral director / embalmer. I also do some portrait painting on the side...more of a hobby really.

Cool, would be great to see some of those. Any Phantasm related?
I graduated as a Geologist, but now I work as fraud investigator working for the Scottish Legal Aid Board. I catch solicitors who fraudulently claim money from the taxpayer. It's really just data analysis work.

I am currently going to school for geology. I was a photography major, but I don't see myself being a successful artist. So I changed my major to geology. I honestly don't know how I will make a career out of it. But it sucks being unemployed right now. I can barely even afford school, and have been thinking of making the fall semester my last.

It’s fascinating to see the trend of interest in Geology between several members. I, too, took a course on Geology a couple of years ago and found it quite fascinating! Especially stromatolites, the historic timeline/vein in rocks indicating the asteroid explosion that likely killed the dinosaurs (I forget the metal that was indicative of asteroid material), the idea that all continents formed one large landmass twice (or more) in the past and will again in the future (cool knowing that the west coast of Africa was once joined with the east coast of the United States), the ongoing “cookie cutter” creation of Hawaiian islands (and that they’ve already named the next one that hasn’t yet formed!)… and, finally, seeing how California will creep slowly northwest past Alaska all the way to Japan, to finally be sucked undersea (subducted) into the ocean crust, in the distant future.
As for careers… While in college, I spent a summer as a Good Humor ice cream vendor in New Jersey—same open-top “California” style truck like Reggie had. That was such fun! I’ve managed a bookstore (also great fun, but the pay is not much above minimum wage). I then went to Cypress College Mortuary Science School (best year of my life!), and spent eight years working as a funeral director and licensed embalmer (fascinating, challenging, and memories I will never forget). Right now, I’m going on thirteen years at 20th Century Fox Studios, working as a systems analyst. I crunch data and research/audit weekly interfaces for all manner of benefits. I’m starting to get my feet wet in payroll systems too.
I was taking some evening courses in advanced math and science, with an eye towards astrophysics, but just never seem to have the time or energy nowadays to keep with it. With the way the economy is now, and with the relative “death” of NASA, potential job prospects along those lines don’t look so good right now.

It's such a shame that sciences such as astonomy and geology do not have the job base to follow on from. A lot of my course mates simply went onto teaching (including myself for a while), which was a shame. I've always loved geology and it's a great laugh getting out in the field and mapping areas. There tends to be work in mining jobs in Australia, but that's one heck of a move for a job.
I've done a short course at uni about astrophysics, but it gets way too full of mathematics for my ability. There are some really good shows though for those of interest. Through the Wormhole (with Morgan Freeman of all people presenting) on Discovery and Wonder of the Solar System and Wonders of the Universe, which is a BBC series which has been on recently. There's also a series called The Sky At Night, which has been running for decades, presented by Sir Patrick Moore and also has Brian May (from Queen) as a co-presenter. I know, strange but he has a PhD in astrophysics.
Hope you enjoy your course Natalie!

I've held many part-time jobs both before and during college.
I attended Central Michigan University from 2005-2010 (went to community college a semester beforehand). I graduated with a BFA (bachelor of fine arts) in art with a graphic design concentration. It's arguably the top design school in the state of Michigan, and getting into my program was tough since it is competitive entry (only 10 or so students allowed in per semester!).
Post-graduation, I moved down to Columbus, Ohio with my girlfriend, as she was offered a great job straight out of school. A couple months later I landed my first real-deal big boy job with a company that makes audit, survey, and management software for companies (primarily insurance companies, but not exclusively). I am the sole graphic designer for the entire company, with my official title being Graphic Designer & Marketing Specialist.

Originally, I was in Law Enforcement/Corrections.
I got my start as an Infrantryman in the United States Marine Corps--0311. Trigger-puller.
When I got out I went to work for the Cook County Sheriff's Department in Chicago, Illinois. I did that for about ten years, and then I moved to Florida....where I went into the hospitality industry.
I actually make more money tending bar and waiting tables than I did after ten years of being on the force.
Go figure.

Right now I work for an Optics company in Orlando. We supply laser optics and other laser components.
I am majoring in Political Science Pre-Law at the University of Central Florida. After that it will probably be Law School.
Before working where I currently am, I worked at a Funeral Home performing removals and cremations. Loved the job, just not the pay. Even with an AS in Funeral Science, licensed FD's only make $30K max down here.

I'm currently working at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (the Oscar folks) in the mailroom. Have been here (do I dare say) 25 years! I like my job though. Definitely recession- proof! And have major benefits & pension. It allowed me to work on P3 & P4 as well. I probably wouldn't have been able to work on them otherwise. Before the Academy, I worked at The Broadway dept store in Carlsbad, CA . Then moved to Los Angeles to work at the Academy.
