The Civil War scene from Phantasm Oblivion really affected me, kinda stuck in my head. I have been thinking about the implications and possibilities from this. There is a Civil War era fort here on Amelia Isle, Ft. Clinch, and every time i visit i always drift back to that Oblivion scene. Last night i fell asleep watching 'The Civil War' on PBS, thinking about P4. My Great-Grandfather fought in the War, he was drafted into the Confederacy, 13th Georgia Calvary, Company B. , maybe i feel a connection with that scene from growing up hearing about his story, i don't know. Just thinking about this part of the Phantasm story,i talked to Guy Thorpe about filming this scene awhile back and was wondering if anyone else really bought into this scene? -Prymal

I think some people take the scene literally, Mike having met the Tall Man in the past as a soldier in the civil war in a previous life. Personally I just took it as a glimpse of the Tall Man's existance stretching across a large expanse of time and Mike "leaped" into the mind of the soldier rather than being there himself.
I think it worked really well and was really creepy. The harshness of the Tall Man's methods mirroring the quality of medical care back in those times. Again, one of the many other side stories which could easily be taken on further.

That's an interesting concept Steve, of Mike remote viewing from the soldier without really being there. This scene has me thinking of a kind of "steampunk", or "victorian" style Phantasm backstory. I have a REALLY great concept for a new story that i am mulling over...

That would be very cool. Have you read The Difference Engine at all? That could give you some inspiration.

No i have not read this, Steve. Thanks for the heads up, i will try to read that. When i see that i have a solid story AND the time to write this story, i will do a "coming soon" run down to give everyone an idea what this will be about...

It's by Bruce Stirling and Willliam Gibson, been around a while so you may be able to pick it up cheaply. Robert Rankin does a lot of steampunk stuff as well.

Cool, thanks again Steve. I don't know a lot about steampunk, victorian, or goth, but i think they look really cool and would mesh well in the Phantasm Universe if treated correctly.-Prymal

from Phantasm Exhumed, you all should get this book by the way, the civil war scene was originally going to reveal that Mike's ancestor was the original alien. In it Jeb Morningside is doing the autopsy and cuts into Mike's head. Jeb is caught by surprise when instead of red blood, Mike's ancestor squirts out yellow blood. The yellow blood then lands on Jeb and infects him. Don decided not to have that as part of the story and changed it up to what it is in the movie. Now, instead of being Jeb Morningside helping during the civil war, he's the Tall Man following a certain group of soldiers around in order to acquire dead bodies.
