The tall man doesn't really seem to care about his own kind seeing how he crushes that sphere with nary a care.

I think for this film the theme revolves around Mike trying to save Liz. Both of which knowing of each others existence and "powers." It more or less Mike trying to save Liz from the Tall Man.

Well come to think of it that sort of is the point inferno was making...he was very drawn to Liz because of her experiences - it didn't seem like a romantic or sexual attraction to her but a spiritual one, an attracting to a likening of mental-space.
