You know, I'm watching this right now, and I noticed that the scene where Reg takes Mike to Sally and Sue's antique shop is the exact take that is used at the end of Oblivion. You know, Reg and Mike driving the truck into the darkness. It seems that if that take were to be extended, the "it's just the wind" conversation would fit d**n near perfectly. But, I wonder what Reg actually heard to make him say "did you hear something", instead of Mike's voice over. The dwarf was still in the truck's freezer at that point in the first film. Perhaps he heard the dwarf moving around? But then why would Mike say "it's just the wind"? Wouldn't he want to investigate knowing there is dwarf lying 2 feet behind him? This may have been known to many of you, but I just thought it was interesting. We could extend Phantasm ourselves just by taking the flashbacks from Oblivion and placing them in the first film where we think they'd best fit.

It's quite interesting how you spotted that, but perhaps the original footage itself was supposed to mean something else entirely? After all, the original film was intended to be much longer, and Coscarelli had to edit and cut a lot of scenes.
Perhaps the way the scene was featured in the flashback in Oblivion was the way it was intended - perhaps before Mike had even visited the graveyard, him driving with Reggie and hearing strange things?
Of course, I don't actually know whether that was the case or not.

I only know in my opinion that scene is the best way to have ended the Phantasm series.

Yes, i agree! I loved how the series ended...what's that saying...always leave them wanting more? Coscarelli certainly did that! Phantasm 4 was one of the few (actually, it's the ONLY one i can think of) that actually had me on the edge of my seat, right up to the end. I just kept saying "NO, No, NO, this cannot be happening, No, NO...AAAGGHHH!" LOL, great fun. I wish i could watch it for the 1st time all over again.

I remember when it first came out and the buildup to it. Wish I could relieve that again too.

Also, what gave Don the inspiration to use the unseen footage? I mean i realize low budget, but how did they ever script around that?

I would love for the Philms to make a special theatre appearance out here on the east coast.

wasn't it mentioned in the commentary for 4 that this scene was one of the many endings Don had?
Also wasn't Mike outside the same area that antiques was at when Reggie picked him up?

Only I felt upset about Mike's fate right at the end...
