I teach college composition, and recently used Stephen King's essay "Why We Crave Horror Movies" as one of my readings for the class. To accompany it, I showed a few selections from a special from Bravo TV that is a top 100 scariest movies countdown. Among them is Phantasm, so I of course had to use that selection. No one in any of the classes had seen or even heard of the series, but hey, at least in only two days' time I gave close to two hundred people their introduction to the film! Four community college classes and three university classes have been initiated!

That's incredible - what did they think of it all?

Reaction was mixed, but it was with all the clips, as the films in the countdown tend to be ones that to college freshmen are seen as ollllllllld movies. To them, the Saw series is old and passe, so they are not all that impressed with movies from the 1970s and 1980s with Freddy, Michael Myers, Chucky, and the like. I heard a couple of chuckles when the piece from the special showed Mike waking up with the Tall Man over him and two dwarves coming up from the ground and grabbing Mike from either side of his bed. When you look at that shot these days, it is done very crudely and obviously, so to them it's kind of silly. A couple of students who I knew are cinephiles asked me a couple of quick questions about Phantasm, though, so that was kinda fun to hear/talk about. Whether they will actually go out and watch the series is another matter, but a couple of them were interested in what it is about and wanted to make sure they got the name right! And in any case, at least nearly 200 people who had never encountered Phantasm have now been introduced to the Tall Man!
