Just joined here, long time Phantasm fan. I come here every so often just to get a fix of info / speculation. This is probably nothing. I re watched Phantasm tonight before I joined. I noticed on Mike's desk there was a novel just out of focus. Its sitting on the desk book marked in a sort of way with the book spine pointing up. The first time I notice it is when he brings the Tall mans finger home in the box. The second time is when Jody locks him in his room and he gets the inspiration to create the shotgun from the hammer and thumb tack. Perhaps its a prop and means nothing, but It might be interesting to know what Mike is reading about at the time. Perhaps the story in the book is adding to the 'nightmares' Perhaps if we could know what the novel was, it may be a clue! Sorry if this has been discussed before.

Welcome, jbdms. The novel is My Name is Legion by sci-fi author Roger Zelazny (of "Damnation Alley" fame). The cover art is from the famous Hildebrandt Brothers and depicts a robot's return to Earth, standing in a fiery doorway, looking down on a prone soldier. I forget the story, but the cover for me was always significant in its foreshadowing. When I wrote a novelization of "Phantasm" in 1979, I tied in this significance since Mike, just moments later, would throw open his front door and be confronted with the towering form of a very scary, almost robotic, alien "The Tall Man." And the flames in the background, to me, foreshadowed the exploding hearse minutes after that! On a simpler level, the novel simply seemed to indicate that Mike was interested in science fiction and, perhaps, more open minded (and imaginative) than his brother. During high school I had the honor of striking up a brief pen pal relationship with author Zelazny (who lived in New Mexico). I started reading his famous Amber series, and--with his help--even did a book report on his works. He passed away a few years later (alas). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Name_Is_Legion_(Zelazny_collection)Good question and, again, welcome to the forum! --Kristen

Thank you. You guys rock! It's so great after all these decades to finally be able to SHARE stuff with fellow phans. Throughout the 80's, I thought I was one of the only fans out there! Everyone would reply, "Fantasia? The Disney film?" Ha ha!

I just ordered the "I am legion"book from amazon.co.uk. I got curious. it cost 0.1 english pound, that is like 20 cents + 4 punds in p&p. Going to read it and see if there is any parallels to Phantasm. Ordered the Exumed book as well, I got two eyes - and two books to read. =)
More credit to postmortem: If the postmortem picture is not photo shopped - then she is spending time with The Tall Man and what more than that gives kudos? I mean wwwwoooowwww!!!
Also, postmortem has a cool nickname name, and if she is a she - that is a large asset among all boys horror nerds, lol, only kidding.
Take care.

I am Legion is a different book, by Matheson, and inspired that creepy Charlton Heston film Last Man on Earth (I think that's the title). I actually loved the Matheson novel very much as a kid! Very "Twilight Zone" in atmosphere. The postmortem avatar isn't photoshopped. I asked Kim, the costume assistant on P2, to take a picture of me with Angus. While I was smiling, he suddenly grabbed both my shoulders and pulled me backwards towards him, kind of resting his chin on my head. I was so surprised! Kind of a "The funeral is about to being, SIR!" moment for me! That look he's making is classic! "Postmortem" is a term we often used in the mortuary trade. Autopsied cases that came back for prepping were nicknamed "posts." And I'm proud to be a nerd!

I believe the Charlton Heston movie you're referring to is, "The Omega Man." the (great) matheson book is I AM LEGEND. LAST MAN ON EARTH was a 1964 film based on it, starring vincent price. LAST MAN has an unnerving, proto-NOTLD feel to it and is much, _much_ better than the later adaption, OMEGA MAN (1971).

Agreed, I Am Legend is a fantastic book and Last Man on Earth is indeed superior to Omega Man. Last Man on Earth fell into public domain so you should be able to find that movie streaming just about anywhere.
The Zelazny book itself was not one of his better outings. I have a real soft spot of Damnation Alley as well as the early Amber novels but Legion didn't particularly stick out for me.
