Even if this is the last film, tying everything up COMPLETELY just wouldn't feel like Phantasm. You know what I mean? I do. The mystery and riddle of it all is what makes the films so rewatchable, and worthy of endless discussion. I fear that if they attempt to explain it all, it could end up like Highlander 2. What I mean by that is, the first Highlander was a film complete in itself, and still left us with mystery and wonder. Highlander 2 attempted to explain everything, and it demystified the franchise. Yeah, I think ideally what we're after is a story that ties up the arcs of Mike, Reggie, Jody and Jebediah, and gives us SOME revealing insight into the Tall Man, his aims and the Red Planet, but not to the extent that all the mystery is stripped out of it and it becomes mundane. Also, whatever they do, it should still support the parallel possibility of it all existing in Mike's imagination.

I am torn, I would love some closure just for my sanity's sake, but if there was even the smallest inkling of hope for more movies ......

Leave it open. To me I loved how these movies end leaving it up to what do you think happens. I LOVED Phantasm oblivions ending.
Besides......its never over

I decided to change my vote to leaving it open. Not because I would want a P6, (honestly I wouldn't. I'm happy with Don leaving it at P4) but because I love speculating on things that could happen. If it were just left at P4, we have all these theories we came up with and speculation as to where Reggie went to when he went through the space gate, all these topics for discussion. Now that there is a P5, all these theories are just nothing now. There is just what is absolute in part 5. So, I would kind of want part 5 to not really tie EVERYTHING up. But I don't want another sequel after that. I had a good time working my brain around questions P4 left us, and should P5 leave us with just as many intriguing questions, I would now have even more mind bending concepts and thoughts to play with. That's always the fun part. So, I'm with 4barrelhemi on this one.

I do want it to end. To have a fitting ending. with Scrimm being on in years I don't see him doing another film. So it would be best to end the series. It would be nice to have an all night Phantasm marathon and watch an entire movie series begin and end.

I think it should end because Angus can't possibly come back for another one, being 87 and all, and I don't think anybody could replace him in a sequel or reboot.
However, I think it will still leave us with some mysteries. Something to think about. It won't be a neatly-wrapped ending, I'm sure. That isn't Don's style.

i'm inclined to hope for the same; wrap it up as a series, but don't give us all the answers. for one thing, i should think explaining away all those loose ends would involve a lot of contrivance.

previously i had wondered aloud (or in print) how much of this new movie was planned for or set up by the time of OBLIVION. given that i think OBLIVION was meant as the end (that bittersweet closing scene, reggie's song over the credits as a capper, sixteen years of silence), i suppose don just wings it when PHANTASM time swings back around?

Wrap it up! They got lots of years to tie the knots together, so an ending to it all would make Mike and friends the winners in this long duell. Otherwise I guess that Tall man wins If he can't be stopped, and we don't need that do we? Also the actors aren't young enough to make more parts, so end it and the sell the trade mark for remakes... go main stream, sell merchandise, lunch boxes, baby t-shirts and so on... Let the warriors of life win at the end!

Let the warriors of life win at the end! I agree with this, although, as I may have said elsewhere, if they "remake" the film I think it should be set in the same universe (multiverse?) as the existing films. In other words, make a distantly-connected sequel with a new cast of characters and a new "successor" Tall Man, in a film that assumes no previous knowledge of the franchise but has enough evidence and continuity references to connect it for the phans. The Phantasm series has enough wibbley-wobbley-timey-wimey, interdimensional weirdness going on that Don could easily start over on an alternate Earth, or in a different region on the same Earth (who says there is only one Tall Man, and he works only in the northwestern USA?), and have events and even characters carry over in some small way. Depending on how Ravager pans out, maybe Michael Baldwin could play the Tall Man, or Reggie could have a role as a crazy old guy with a long white beard (driven mad by his endless war with Tally) whose rants about other dimensions and killer balls nobody believes until it's too late. Kinda like how the protagonist from the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers shows up (briefly) in the 70s remake.

Yeah, I think this has always been the case, to some extent. At the end of Phantasm, for example, it is heavily implied that Mike is pulled into another dimension rather than a mere closet. At the end of Phantasm II, it's pretty obvious Reggie isn't expected to just get up and dust himself down.

At the end of Phantasm II, it's pretty obvious Reggie isn't expected to just get up and dust himself down. it might be on one of the commentary tracks (or i may well be making it up), that don figured out while working on III that the series would proliferate; that there was an audience who wanted to see more. i guess if there is any "grand plan" it would have been formulated at that time. the gold sphere implant carries over from III; whether reggie's adventure in dwarfland was part of the plan all along, or that simple logic and the semi-open ending of IV dictates where we're going next... who knows?
