I think they can pull off doing both.
I think they could have a satisfying ending with the story of the Tall Man, but then replace him with his protege, Mike.
That could then end the series with a kind of Twilight Zone vibe.
But it could also begin a new series with Mike doing whatever it was the Tall Man was doing for as many movies as Mike can act in.

I would like an ending that gives Mike, Reggie, Jody, Tally and the gang closure, but leaves the door slightly ajar to future films if the opportunity arose again. I don't want them to tie up EVERYTHING, it woudldn't be appropriate or respectful to the sensibility of the other movies in the series, but the fact that this *might* be the last chance to make a Phantasm film with the original cast should be borne in mind; another cliffhanger ending would be a bad idea, as it may never be resolved after this. I don't want to see everyone killed off, I don't want the Tall Man to win, nor do I think it would be entirely satisfying to have a straightforwardly happy ending with the gang smoking the Tall Man and going on vacation to celebrate, all sitting around a pool drinking pina coladas and cracking jokes and winking at the camera. It would make it seem too easy, too much of a cop out.
I'd like to see a happy medium between these extremes. Perhaps Mike and Reggie do defeat the Tall Man, but at some terrible cost...

I kind of want it all wrapped up. I feel that of everything Mike and Reg have been through, they (and us) deserve closer. Something to officially end the series withought room for a sequel. Even if it means for Mike to die in the end and the Tall Man to continue his reign. For some reason, I find myself fighting on the Tall Man's side here. Too many films have the good guys triumph over evil, but in most horror franchises the villian dies. It would be interesting to see evil win this time. I feel that Mike's story has gone on long enough. If part 5 stays open, no doubt fans will be begging for a part 6 the way they have been begging for this one.

It pretty much standard operating procedure for evil to triumph, or at least strike a critical blow, at the end of most horror films these days. The last six horror films I watched - House of the Devil, Hatchet, Drag Me to Hell, Apollo 18, The Dyatlov Pass Incident and V/H/S/ - all had downer endings. It's fine if it's a one-off film, or characters we are have not been set up to care about over four decades, but to have the Tall Man unequivocably win and defeat Mike and Reggie's efforts of years and years (essentially their whole lives), would feel like a kick in the teeth for fans, and I hope they don't do it.

I want some kind of closure to things so I hope and believe that they'll wrap everything up (and that's why I'm so excited about Ravager), another open end would be kind of a let down if you ask me.

According to the press release this is the last one. I know, but I just mean what sort of ending would you prefer, not do you want the series to continue. For either answer in the poll, the idea behind it is that this will definitely be the last in the series.

My concern is that if they do that, then we'll be looking at a crappy reboot in a few years. I'd much rather have new original stories, with Mike taking the lead since Angus likely won't be around for any more films.

Yeah, let it be the final chapter but let it end on a high note.

Hmm, go figure, I haven't seen those ones.
The way I see it, every and any franchise is vulnerable no matter how the last one left off. If Hollywood thinks they can make a buck, they'll buy anything.

I for one want the series to end. But not to wrap everything up. (when I showed them to me Fiance she really liked them. But told me after she though it was a waste of time since there was no ending in Oblivion) But for myself The great part about the series is that with every answer comes more questions.
I'm ready for Reggie to have his final showdown with The Tall Man, Though it may come at great costs and even his own life It would seem fitting to save everyone he loves.
And I for one (Crucify me if you want) would be okay with a re-make. Now that we are getting closure on the original story and cast of characters I wouldn't mind seeing a new version of Phantasm. Wither its amazing or crap We will still have the originals.

I think we're dealing with the inevitable here. Unfortunately, everyone is at the ages they are at and they've been carrying these roles around with them for 35 YEARS! I would like to see the series and story end with these original actors/actress(Kat). I'm not big on remakes, but if Don wanted to remake Phantasm and finally get paid, I'm fine with that. After all, he did give us five films. I think it would make Ravager a stronger film if it was the final film with (most) questions answered and a sense of finality. We're already used to open-ended films, so this one would feel different in a "wow, this is really it" vibe. I can't wait for Ravager!

I agree with every single point of this, and I think this is more-or-less what is probably going to happen. In the Bloody Disgusting interview Don talks about "closure" and seeing the characters "complete their arcs". This really is it. So it'd better be good!

I think there is a way to give everyone the closure they want, and still leave the door open for future possibilities.
You can still have Reggie defeat the Tall Man and get the girl finally, maybe have Mike get closure with the spirit of Jody and maybe even his parents, and all that stuff. Everyone rides off into the sunset.
But maybe at the end of the film have a 15 second shot, or maybe even just a stinger after the credits, showing Mike lifting up a coffin all by himself and putting it into the back of a hearse, and that's it.
So you get the closure you want, but in classic Phantasm fashion, it leaves a question mark at the end, and potentially allows for future possibilities.
I could see them doing another 5 films with Mike as the Tall Man, and a new cast of heros, maybe Reggie has a kid he doesn't know about from one of his dalliances on the road who is now a young adult, throw in a new character or two, maybe one of the gravers was able to be turned back to human or something, maybe they find an ally from the Red Planet. I'm sure the current cast and crew have friends and family in the industry that could fill these rolls and thus still provide the same sense of camaraderie. Kind of a next generation type of scenario. It would be a different kind of Phantasm, a new chapter in an ongoing story. I would very much prefer this to a reboot.
Besides, I don't necessarily want all the questions answered or every loose end tied up, the mysteries and riddles of it all are what makes the films so rewatchable.

Even if this is the last film, tying everything up COMPLETELY just wouldn't feel like Phantasm. You know what I mean?

Even if this is the last film, tying everything up COMPLETELY just wouldn't feel like Phantasm. You know what I mean? I do. The mystery and riddle of it all is what makes the films so rewatchable, and worthy of endless discussion. I fear that if they attempt to explain it all, it could end up like Highlander 2. What I mean by that is, the first Highlander was a film complete in itself, and still left us with mystery and wonder. Highlander 2 attempted to explain everything, and it demystified the franchise.
