Question - anybody wonder about the title? Why is it "Ravager"?
To "ravage" means to wreak havoc upon, destroy. So, who is the ravager of the title?
"The ravages of war" could be something the subtitle is referring to. Arguably, the military-like fatigues and weapons support that, so perhaps we'll see a full on war with the Tall Man?
Then, there are the "ravages of age". It's been, what 35 years since the first movie? Could the film be about getting old/aging on some level? The cast looks so much older than when we first saw them.
Or maybe it refers to time itself. The series has always been about time and space to some extent. Is time the ultimate ravager, against which nobody can triumph? (Cue the Gollum riddle.)

Great question! The most obvious answer is that The Tall Man is the Ravager: what he does to towns and cities could be described in this way. The Ravager could also refer to a being "behind" the TM; the alien force that ravages entire planets, entire universes, who "wears" Jebediah Morning side for his operations on Earth but possesses a multitude of forms on a multitude of worlds. Or it could be war/time/age, or quite possibly a clever combination of all of these things.

I took it as meaning this is the end; things are going to be destroyed as the battle draws to a close.

It could be that they wanted to have a cool subtitle that had a roman numeral in the middle, now that I think about it.
OBL IV ION did not really use that word, I think.
I wonder if RA V AGER will end up the same.
Who knows? But a lot to ponder.

Maybe it refers to the Tall Man's intentions to ravage the Earth.

I hope the title sequence is as we come to know it since P2. Chiselled chrome letters revealed by a sun rising like light with that ominous music.

Great question, and excellent speculation on your guys' part. It's probably a combination of the themes you all mentioned.
As a side note, does it bother anyone else that the "V" in RaVager isn't in the center of the word? Like with OblIVion... the "IV" has 3 letters to either side, so it looks right. RaVager is off-center!

i think we had a discussion here one time on the subtitles that Don eventually pulled from the series, but if i remember, i am in minority as i really liked the subtitles The Ball is Back, Lord of the Dead, Oblivion, raVager..they just seem cooler to me as not only being sequels ( and partly prequels) they are also their own stories in their own right...

Huh. I thought "The Ball is Back" was a tagline - not a subtitle.

Huh. I thought "The Ball is Back" was a tagline - not a subtitle. I think you are right, Phantasm II's full title was just "Phantasm II", and "The ball is back" was a tagline. It's like how 4's full title was Phantasm: OblIVion ("OblIVion" being the subtitle) and "The sequel with balls" was the tagline. Phantasm III had the subtitle "Lord of the Dead" and various different taglines, including the brilliant "If you don't get it this time, we're going to have to drill it into your head!"

Subtitles are mostly irrelevant.
In the trailer it looks extremely Bad Ass with it just reading "Phantasm V" with the giant red roman numeral V behind "Phantasm" but then when it switches to "RaVager" it really looses its luster and seems kind of cheap.
I'd loose the subtitle and keep it "Phantasm V"

Kathy Lester wrote a wonderful song a few years ago just for phans about the "Lady in Lavender" character she plays. One of the lines in the chorus is, "I may be a ravager..." On FB, I asked her if her song (that line) was the inspiration for P5's title and she enthusiastically confirmed. The one who did the actual "ravaging" in the very beginning was the Tall Man's alter ego.
The "V" is about as close as you can get to the center of the word. I'm cool with it. But I too would probably prefer just a number after Phantasm.

That's very interesting. After 35 years, she still looks stunning. Maybe she will ravage Reggie in the new part. Then they could call it RavREGer.

What 'meaning'? It's just a good, apropos' word to slip the roman numeral for '5' into.

Now it's bothering me, but I don't think to the same extent as you two.

would have preferred just a straight PHANTASM V, no subtitle. PHANTASM: OBLIVION doesn't bother me, but i vaguely remember (don't press me for examples) a lot of this one-word-subtitle thing happening in genre film circa 1998 through the turn of the century and thought we might have been over it by now.
i don't care either way as long as the title sequence stays the same as previous entries. what a thrill that'll be!

What I believe is the alien being that is the Tall Man is known as the Ravager. It's goal is to ravage other planets. therefore he is the Ravager of worlds.
