Isolation is the theme from OblIVion, if it wasn't obvious from the desert scene. Discuss this theme here. Check out this essay written quite marvelously about the four films www.phantasmarchives.net/art_nightmarish.htmlLive together and die alone. Mike chooses the isolation of the desert for the final part of his transformation. He's trying to escape th reality of what is happening to him.

The whole tone of the movie is very isolated. It's very quiet from a sound stand point, very peaceful. That coupled with being in the dessert, Reg driving on long winding roads in the middle of nowhere...it's quite introverted. I like it.

I love how the stark landscapes of the film contribute to the theme of isolation. Seeing Mike out in Death Valley alone -- you'd think he hadn't another friend in the whole world. But he does.... just one.

A lot of it is, when you're at your complete worst in life, you don't want anyone to see you like that. Not even your closest friends. You want to battle alone. Getting away from the world seemed like Mikes only chance.
Dustin, you're absolutely right, the Death Valley scenes were extraordinary.

As much as I loved the Death Valley stuff in P4, I hope we see some mausoleums and towns in P5.

The new Saw 4 movie actually has a trap set in a mausoleum. It's pretty sweet, the setting.

Isolation in Death Valley was a welcomed contrast from being on the road in the previous films. It was portrayed greatly here & it worked. OblIVion is absolutely amazing. A great chapter in the series.

I'm so glad there's love here for Oblivion. I recall seeing phan opinions on Phantasm.com back when the movie premiered that were less than flattering. I think it's standing with genre folks has improved over time.
If only the same thing could be said of Phantasm III. I weep for the criticisms dumped on that film every hour of every day. I personally think Phantasm II doesn't get enough crap for being as linear and mainstream as it is.... but now I sound like I'm complaining about P2... .and really, I'm not. I love all four films.

I don't get why people crap all over Phantasm III. At the moment, it's my current favourite in the series. Maybe it's the humor in it that turns people off. I don't know. Regardless, I think it's great.

i did gripe about part 3 at first but it has improved with time since i got it on dvd. so the little things that bothered me about it no longer do that much. i always loved part 4 because of the use of the old footage and dream like feeling through out the film.

P3 is probably my least favorite just because I thought it brought in characters that weren't needed and threw out some humour I just didn't like.
That's just my opinion though. I thought and still think P4 brought the series back where I liked it.

The only movie i have not really seen since i was old enough to understand is Phantasm 1, but it's currently being delivered. Out of the other 3, i would say Oblivion was sweet just because of the crazy ending, which could be interpreted in like 100 different ways, but P2 will always be dear to my heart as the first i had ever seen.

OLD THREAD RESURRECTION!
I do agree that isolation is a prevalent theme in P4. Everything and everyone is isolated... obviously Mike throughout the entire film, and even Reggie for the most part. It's a very interesting contrast to the previous three films.
I guess if isolation is the theme of P4, what would you say are the major themes of the other films?
I'd say:
P1 - Abandonment P2 - Revenge P3 - Conflict? P4 - Isolation

I like this idea, Goph.
As for the individual themes, I agree with 1,2 and 4. I think that 3 will end up being a transition film if we ever get a continuance to the story, be it animated or written. Reg is transitioning from revenge to simply sustaining life. He is actively looking for a conclusion to his journey, where in P2 he is only focused on killing, killing and more killing.

I took part three as a commitment Philm. Jody returns and commits to helping Regg (i.e. helping Mike) who is in turn committed to helping Mike, as Mike is committed to finding out more of the Tall Man and destroying him. The Tall Man seems committed to turning Mike into his protege or future replacement (hell, i think everybody thinks Mike is the Tall Man at some point). I have said again and again, i really accept all Philms as they are. I think 2 is my fav just because that was the first one that i watched. I had no idea what Phantasm was or that 22yrs later i would be the phan that i am. I still remember that night of watching P2, on a tues as i recall, and going to school the next day and telling my two good friends how blown away i was by it. Funny how time passes and yet some things that are years behind are still such a passion.
