After watching Ravager a couple of times, I will admit, that it is a unique film, in that it asks more questions than it answers. I think this is why some fans (including myself) were disappointed or caught off guard.
Do you think that Ravager was trying too much to copy the first Phantasm (1979)?
I believe what made the sequels unique was that they were their own films and none were identical to the other. They were all related and had similarities (Reggie love interest, sci-fi elements, horror and action, and show-down with the Tall Man), but didn't try too hard to duplicate their predecessor(s).
I think Ravager tried too much to duplicate P1 by forcing life's issues and human suffering into the story, when it didn't have to. In P1, we realized that Mike was afraid of losing Jody, but to me, the focal points of P2-P4 showed that Reggie had assumed Jody's role, allowing Mike to overcome the loss of his brother. So, i feel Ravager confused many, when it sort of went backwards instead of forwards.
I think most fans would've just been happy with 90 minutes of apocalyptic Mike and Reggie battling dwarfs and stocking up on arms and ammo, and mowing down the Tall Man in a fiery inferno (Red Planet/scorched earth), with a few cameos.
I think most fans were looking for answers, instead of more questions.
Ravager is a weird film to comprehend, maybe they (Hartman, Coscarelli) wanted it that way. Me, personally, would've been happy with another P2 (drive-in movie style 90 minute thrill ride/battle).

Same here. I wanted some questions answered, not necesarily all of them. Instead we got none answered and we got hit with many more unresolved and poorly thought out new riddles. I've always been perfectly content with the end of Phantasm IV. We can see it in two major interpretations. And at least the 4 films remained consistent. And consistently good. Had they made the ending I proposed in the alternate thread (with your additions definitely!) I would have been tickled pink with delight. I would have loved the "final" Phantasm film.

Yes, that plot/script you wrote in the "Create Your Own Phantasm 5, was excellent phantasmcommunity.proboards.com/thread/2249/create-own-phantasm-plot-line. It would be a road movie, like P2 (Reggie, Rocky, grown-Tim and sphere Jody) driving across the country to disable all the Tall Man's dimension forks (revealed from the uncovered Morningside mortuary papers) they found in the condemned/vacant Morningside funeral home--which was semi-destroyed in 1979 from Reggie closing the first gate (P1). The Tall Man has unleashed hordes of gravers, dwarves and zombies on Earth (apocalypse) -- as a response to Mike refusing to accept his role as successor in Oblivion. Because the Tall Man now has a mandate for the capture/killing of Mike (via his minions), the group hides Mike in different places (during the movie), as he also recovers from his Oblivion injuries. As you stated, the movie would work up towards the last gate/dimension fork to be disabled-- resulting in a climax/epic final battle with the Tall Man (concluding with a small hint/whisper that, " it's never over... fade to credits). I would sooo enjoy watching that. An upbeat, thriling ending, instead of Reggie struggling for life, dying (and succumbing to natural causes)--in a hospital bed. I feel a golden opportunity was missed (with Ravager). We should put a script together (dialogue) based off of your detailed plot, and send it anonymously to Don Coscarelli as Phantasm VI (P6).

Amen brother, amen! Unfortunately, there can never be a Phantasm VI.

I have a feeling that we will be seeing a Phantasm VI in some way, shape or form, somewhere down the line. Remember the cast did a read thru of the entire Stephen Romano script at Alamo Drafthouse, against green screen, a few years back. So there's still at least one more Angus Scrimm performance to behold in our future.

Ravager was made for the phans the cheapest way possible. Only thing I enjoyed was seeing the cast one last time. Especially Angus...Reggie, Mike and Angus had the most screen time. Everyone else was barely in it. This obviously started as "Reggie's Tales" and then they just added on throughout the years. The story was weak. I'm not in a rush to buy the DVD. I might just wait for the box set.

I'll get it only to see the great actors putting on some of their best performances. Maybe that's why I hated it so much. The actors all kicked ass like crazy, but the movie itself sucked. So I really wanted to like it, and I like the acting aspect, but everything else about it was so poorly done, it's impossible to enjoy.
Plus, the DVD/Blu-ray should have lots of extras (cut scenes and what not) that weren't in the movie, so it should be worth getting. I already have the Region 2 Sphere set. Love it! But it'll be great to see the original remastered in such high definition!
