I finally found that webpage on how to make your own Sphere's www.halloweenonlinemagazine.com/sfx/sphere1-1.html I really think I'm gonna try this they don't look to bad at all and seem easy to make. Alot better than paying outrageous prices for ones on ebay and people trying to make a buck off these kind of things.

From the looks of that page, the ball will turn out great. It would make a good christmas tree decoration or hanging off a rear view mirror. Next project, the barrells from the gateway room in Phantasm I. Those would make a good laundry basket and at the rate I'm going the barrells will be piled high.

I'm going to make a video tutorial for the Archives on making your own spheres when we get closer to Christmas. The materials just aren't out in stores right now. You had better believe at the end of the video that my sphere will not only look good - but it'll fly, drill and make a mean cup of hot cocoa.
Or.... or something weird like that. I haven't figured it all out yet.

Wow, I've got me a project. I'll bet that craft store on Castro Street would either have the ornaments or point me to wherever one goes in Frisco to get them. Got an urge to Do Something Tricky and Do It Right. Flyin' Christmas tree ornament indeed! So Rox wasn't joking about that. Interesting these are only made by a company in...Chatsworth? The San Fernando Valley area where the first film was made? I bet anything the original spheres were actually made with these things, though I'm guessing the "business end" isn't made of paper. I want mine to have a motor in it and a spinning screw. I don't think one could be made to make coffee but that does give me a wacky idea. Going to make two of the things. One to hang in my window and the other will be more utilitarian, if I can wing this. Wow, I'm here actually talking to people about this who know what I'm referring to...weird...it was like my private joke in high school days. Every year my parents would give me one of those lame orange PeeChee folders (this being before Trapper Keepers took over) and whoever designed them thought it was cool to put all these stupid jock illustrations all over it. The basketball player's poised ready to toss the ball into the hoop, but I'd never have that stupid thing for more'n about a day before whipping out a Flair and drawing the forks and drill on the ball - which was just the right size, and positioned right over the forehead - what else could I do? People'd see it and say WTF is THAT? I'd shrug, "It's the silver ball from Phantasm." To which they'd say "Huh?" and I'd nonchalantly explain: "Brain devourer. Guards a mausoleum that prefers its residents be in an appropriately dead condition for that variety of housing." They would just stand there, say, "ooo-kay, " and I'd say, "Never mind, just see the film." I guess at least someone did, because over the years the spheres started popping up on other PeeChee folders mercilessly menacing that poorly-drawn basketball jock!

This think looks totally doable. I might make several. A gold ball seems like it could happen as well. I think I can work metal blades into these contraptions though.
Maybe I can draw up a little casket-looking contraption for them the slide out of...

Maybe I can draw up a little casket-looking contraption for them the slide out of... Iceman: I was thinking about this today since at least one of these has to have metal parts (the utilitarian one). Seems to me I'd have to get a piece of sheet metal and have someone who knows their way around auto body shops take a welding device of some sort to it. Could such a detail as the curved arrows of the forks be cut out with some sort of metal cutter? Then there's the question of what metal to use. Aluminum would look kind of lame but would be easy to cut... I scrapped the idea of a motor. The thing's a decoration, duh. I want it to look good, though, for that reason.

The materials just aren't out in stores right now. No, but the Xmas season starts about three weeks before Halloween - at least it does in California. And what if say, a contingent of phans called up this outfit in Chatsworth and just ordered some of the things? If I manage it, I'll gladly grab a few more for anyone wanting them. They can't be THAT costly, and it'd be a pleasure to help such a crazy craft. Like an absurd Phantasm quilting bee.

Mesila, I def wouldn't go with aluminum-we are making an offical phantasm item, not a soda can, lol. I wouldn't go as far as welding or an auto body shop. Id check out Home Depot or Lowes or whatever is similar out there in Cali. Im sure you can find something that would work there. Personally, id go to the electrical section first. Alot of the electrical boxes that I use should are really cheap and can be cut pretty easily. There may be something else the could work better in the store though. You seem handy, but I can get more detailed on this topic if you, or anyone else, would like me to.

oops Mesila! I forgot to mention the the best thing for cutting would be a dremel. You can get a black and decker one for about 20 bones and the metal cutting wheels for about 5. Black and Decker are junk tools bet more than sufficient for this project. Not a bad one to have around the house. Just practice on some junk metal first and Im sure you will see that you can get pretty crafty!!!

Mesila, You seem handy, but I can get more detailed on this topic if you, or anyone else, would like me to. Axcctually I'm not "handy" - part of the charm of doing this would be for me to learn how to do and not just think...I've never been that good at crafty things. I like the idea of several people working on these and comparing notes. Please do get detailed, it will help guide, and find out what works and what doesn't. I'm gonna try and find out the contact info for that Chatsworth tchotchka outfit that makes these Christmas decorations. See if I can get 'em mail-ordered before they hit stores. I'd kind of like to have it in the window for Halloween...
