I was just thinking of a way to create more awareness of a 5th installment, something that would insure a profitable outcome for all those invested and...
We all know that Phantasm would make a great video game, and if P5 is slated for early 2009 release, a video game released in the next 6-8 months would market Phantasm to a whole new generation. Depending on a games success it can sell anywhere from 250,000 to 1.5 million copies.
I would release the Phantasm game as a game with no hints (except for those in the know) towards it's cinematic origins. Make the directions just as cryptic as the movie, and thereby create a great adventure, shoot em' up game, with sci fi overtones. This would create quite a buzz if the game kicks, and then when the movie is released it should fair well.
I'm not really sure how long it takes to develop a game from start to finish, but if a team of programmers are used I'm thinking it would be quite quick. The negotiations would have to start immediate as well.
Thoughts anyone?

As much as I would love to see a Phantasm video game, I don't think it would be a good idea. I really don't want Phantasm to be such a cult film like the Evil Dead series. There are too many Evil Dead games with horrible plots that ruin the meaning of it all, plus, too much comedy with Bruce Campbell. I really don't want that to happen the the Phantasms.

I'm not big into videogames based off of movies. Most are pretty bad. The only one from recent memory that was amazing was The Warriors videogame. That's the exception.

Yes, it definitely would have to be amazing. No half ass stuff. A successful video game would elevate Phantasm out of cult status if it was quality.

Could we get in contact with Coscarelli fast enough? Does he have the resources to make such a thing?

Could we get in contact with Coscarelli fast enough? Does he have the resources to make such a thing? Yes, you absolutely could get in touch with Don fast enough. Would he take such a thing seriously? I'm thinking a harsh no. Don is a professional at what he does and has very likely considered other mediums that Phantasm could exist on. Don makes art. There's much debate right now as to whether video games are art or not. Certainly they can be artistic but ultimately, I believe that they're more of a product than they are art. I don't think Don would waste his time on something so contrived as a video game. Even if Don did want to make a video game, it would take months upon months to plan out. Not to mention, if he's having trouble securing the budget for a new movie of Phantasm, how in the heck is he going to be able to get a budget to make a video game? I hope none of this came off too rude. I'm just very against the thought of a Phantasm video game being the launch-pad for a new movie.

you've got a point about fears of it being a launch pad for a new movie

I hope none of this came off too rude. I'm just very against the thought of a Phantasm video game being the launch-pad for a new movie. As Mirai stated, you could pick a role, etc...Don wouldn't finance, the video game company would. Like Nintendo. Wasn't Phantasm big in Japan? Or was that just Kenny and Co.,? I'm sure they would treat it with respect. As far as it not being art, well I think most video games are more art than actual fun (just my opinion). I've stated before, it's mostly eye candy, virtual 3D stuff anyway. I mean what other game could you walk down a mortuary hallway, have dwarves chase you, then hop in your cuda down to the local dimensional fork transport and arrive on the red planet. Like I said, if done tastefully and artistically, it would be a winner. And I'm sure Don wouldn't refuse the extra finance. Let's face it. Phantasm isn't as universal as we think it is. As long as he doesn't sell out, I think there can be a happy medium. He would still be able to keep the story line intact, and market to the current young generation. Isn't this fun debating something that doesn't even exist? ;D I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. And as I drink my Winter Lager (with hints of cinnamon and orange peel).........CHEERS!

It'd be sweet if they did make a game they could make it similar to silent hill if anyone's played that it's eerie but fun with all the monster killing shotgun action so yeah the same camera style as resident evil and silent hill with multiple character choices would be nice and of course you could have some really nice death (game over) screens hahaha.

theres no way that Phantasm is anywhere near popular enough to warrant a video game developer into financing a game, that would be a huge risk for any company, relying on a small cult following to sell enough copies to make a profit. Not too many of the young kids in the video game age range know anything about Phantasm. This will never happen.

That's actually a really good point about The Warriors. But perhaps that is the exception and not the rule.

That's actually a really good point about The Warriors. But perhaps that is the exception and not the rule. Agreed. A huge exception for The Warriors since both the movie & the game are awesome. Most video games based on movies aren't that good.

Most video games based on movies aren't that good. My whole premise is that most teens and college types that play vids, aren't aware of the movie. (Trust me I've asked) Therefor, market it as new game not movie to video. What makes the avid player pick up something new when they're ready to buy? Word of mouth? A game catalogue? Now this is just speculation because I really don't play, but I would guess it would be the same reasoning someone looking for a new movie to rent would base their decision on, probably cover art, story (game description), movie company (game developers). It's all in the marketing. Maybe even title it something else just create more speculation.
