I just watched a Russian film called The Night Watch. (In Russian w/English subtitles.) Quite impressive. It's pretty recent, was filmed mostly in Moscow and the fusillades of rapid-fire editing reminded me a bit of Coscarelli's style, or - even more - the style used in the Evil Dead films. (Though this is more of an intense, less humourous film than they are.)
I was wondering if y'all had any suggestions of other foreign horror/fantasy/sci-fi films (and by "foreign" I mean to say "not made in the USA or England") for me to check out.

Zombi 2 is a pretty good movie if you're into zombies.
If you want some really messed up old foreign horror, watch The Snake People... it's from Mexico and made in the late 60's.

I have just recently gotten into foreign films, but haven't really seen horror foreign films. I just watched a horror Japanese film called Witchbound, which was pretty good.
Though they're not horror films, here are a couple of great foreign films
Downfall. Excellent performance by Bruno Ganz who played Adolf Hitler in this great film about the last days of Hitler and the Third Regime.
Battle Royale. A Japanese film where in Japan, kids are boycotting school and the country is in chaos. A class is selected by impartial lottery and sent to an undisclosed, evacuated location. They have three days to kill each other off until there is only one student left. They are sent to an island, given random weapons, and fight to survive. A pretty brutal film, but it's great!

Battle Royale isn't really horror, i've got the novel and there's a lot in the novel that they could'nt put in the film

Just saw the sequel to nightwatch over summer called Daywatch. Nightwatch I think was the better film. I think there's a third one coming out as well.
I'm quite partial to Dario Argento's films. Mesila mentioned Suspiria in another thread and that's great. And you can't go wrong with Japanese horror like Ringu and Battle Royal is a great film too. If you like really disturbing black comedy, then look for a film called Visitor Q. Very dark, but very funny.
The Devils Backbone is a good ghost story (sam bloke that did Pan's Labyrinth and Chronos)
Black Sheep has just come out in the UK and that's very similar to Braindead (Peter Jackson) with zombie sheep. That's a New Zealand film and some clever references to Army of Darkness and American Werewolf in London.

I have just recently gotten into foreign films, but haven't really seen horror foreign films. It's weird, until seeing Suspiria and The Night Watch I'd never thought the horror genre as something that got much exposure outside of North America, but I am finding I was missing a lot of really interesting stuff. I'd like to look into Japanese horror (NOT ANIME! I think some of it is good but I've got personal reasons for not digging it that much) because the Japanese have different notions of demons than the notions that prevail in the West. That Battle Royale film sounds particularly interesting...very Lord of the Flies-ish. We're on the same wavelength: I just got through watching this less than 24 hours ago, and by far it's the best World War II related film I've ever seen. Christ it almost gets you feeling sorry for the Nazis...(note that I said almost)...but it puts you right there in the bunker with the core Third Reichers as the Russians are closing in, and it apparently it was based on actual memoirs of one of Hitler's secretaries who died in 2002. Brilliant film. It also helped me learn a lot of German...

Oh wow I REALLY have to look for that: I've an obsessive fondness for snakes and also an obsessive fondness for ANYTHING made in the late '60's. Thank you. Thanks for all your suggestions. The Donkey will be very busy this week.

It is. I can pretty much feel the tension that builds up throughout the movie as I watch it.

Have you seen Freezer? A bit like I spit on your Grave. More of a thriller than horror I'd say. Story of Ricky AKA Ricky-Oh (i think that's the title). Live action version of the Manga. Very gory and very funny as well.
