The subject of this thread: things in films that annoy you.
Here, I'll start. My peeve of the moment has to do with credits. There are good ways to do credits and stupid ways.
The Stupid Way to Do Credits:
Make sure every single name (or two or three of them) gets its own screen. Make sure nothing else is going on, except for maybe music. Make the credits go on FOREVER.
Some film I was watching the other day, that was so bad I didn't even remember the title or watch the whole thing, had the credits go on for 8 minutes! That's too long...
I understand it takes a lot of work to make a film, but I like the credits at the END, not the start. When I enjoy a movie I watch it to the very finish, because if I enjoyed it, then I care about the names of the individuals who made it. It seems presumptious to put the credits on before we see ANYTHING about the film at all.
And here another hooray for our man Mr C. whose films seem to never do this - there's just a title and then the movie starts rolling RIGHT AWAY. A lot of directors could learn a few things from Coscarelli.
Side question: Since I do watch the credits when I've enjoyed a film I can't help wondering what a key grip and best boy do. I assume it's something to do with camerawork. Can any of you film students out there elucidate this for me?
And what are some of your movie peeves?

I hate when movies go overboard on CGI & depend on it for everything. It's ok when needed & not overused. CGI just takes more realism away from movies, in my opinion. I'm an old school type. I like animatronics, puppetry, & make-up effects.

I, too, hate the CGI overload.
Also, the thing that really bugs me is the perfect hair and makeup. Everybody knows that when you first wake up, nobody has the perfect hair or if you just came out of a shower, all of their makeup is all still intact. I just ask for a little realness..

I agree with the whole CGI overdoing point. I do love cgi, but in context. There has been some great advances and some movies cannot be done without them. George Romero came under fire when LOTD came out as there was cgi in his films, whereas he always used make up in his earlier films, but he made a good point that some stuff he wanted to do was just not possible without the cgi. I really hate stupid screaming/crying women in horror films who just go on for ages. I always end up with a headache and a strange desire to throttle a cheerleader But anyway, my real pet movie peeve is giving adam sandler a job. ever. or chris rock.

You're right Mesila, "Grip" is a camera mover, and "best boy" is his assistant
My huge pet peeves have to do with modern camerawork and editing. Why the hell is it that it seems that all horror/action nowadays is done through some color-filter? Why? Is blue scary?
The camera is always jumping around, as are the cuts. "So it's gonna be scarier if we keep cutting away from something to something else"? hell no, the longer they linger on one or two subjects, the more suspense is generated!
Another peeve - The lack of creativity in soundtracks! Put some care into your music and your film will be that much scarier! Look at Phantasm, which would have been a totally different film without Fred Myrow's music. Look at Bernard Herrman, do we forget one of his scores? Now all horror scores are made of crappy metal or Jaws ripoffs!

And horror soundtracks are hella lame. I'd rather hear an original score than a soundtrack riddled with the current popular nu-metal bands.

mine would be and this includes any genre type of movie. is when everything is tidied up at the end, too neatly and or a ultra happy ending. this happens a lot in comedy, romance/comedies. sometimes the bad guys/evil wins, it isn't realistic that the good guy always prevails.
try to find a certain book called "The Bridge" by John Skipp & Craig Spector. it is long out of print but a really good horror book with a not so typical unhappy ending. now if some movies utilized endings similar to that book it would up the dread factor in my eyes.

If anyone wants really unhappy fiction to read, just pick up anything Russian.
