fantasyball started this tangent in another thread and it got my mind going. Through all 4 films it becomes apparent that if Michael has a phobia it's of cars and yet he's also always tinkering with them...
Now it's pretty easy to understand being phobic about cars when your brother dies in a car wreck. (Maybe one you yourself started? In that flashback scene in Oblivion it was Michael driving the car...was that right before the wreck? It isn't clear. But I definitely got the impression...) We also don't know what killed the Pearson parents...but it seems to have been some sort of accident that claimed them, the way he puts it: "First he took Mom and Dad"...
And then in Oblivion what does he do when he starts to pick up powers? Build a Sphere...out of...what? Auto parts...
The Tall Man also has terrified Michael in AFAIK all the films except 3 with auto driven vehicles. "The coach will drive itself..." Note that as he got more control of things he started to be able to control the car.
Cars terrify me, so I can really relate to this concept. Everyone seems to know SOMEONE who died in a car wreck. It's a horrible way to die. And it can happen so suddenly. I never became a driver because in driver training I saw after 2 or 3 days time it was just not gonna be a good idea for me to be out on the road. To this day I find it difficult to fathom how casual and non concerned just about all people are when driving cars. They seem to forget they're sitting on a high speed missile and surrounded by other high speed missiles, full of explosive gasoline. Keeping track of the wheel...the pedals, the gauges and THE OTHER DRIVERS was a total nightmare for me. On top of that the instructor was...how do I put it, he was not molesting me but he was this weird 80 year old dude who talked about some pretty inappropriate subjects uninvited to do so in a trainer car with a terrified 17 year old girl. So I had to keep track of the car AND the lech. Argh it's a wonder I can even get into a taxicab, and it's one of the reasons I love SF so much, since you can get anywhere in it on nice safe trollies (well they'd be safe were they not surrounded by CARS...)
I'll shut up now.
I just found this interesting. One of those things I hadn't noticed until reading that post this morning, it's weird because it's so obvious. I'm great at not seeing the obvious, but also great at seeing the unobvious...
